Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Have people been disengaging after last season? Last season got me MORE excited for this year because I saw a lot that Pruitt and Co. can work with. This surprises me.

Attendance, ticket sales and donations have been declining for several years. Stadium renovations have been scaled back and refocused on safety and infrastructure. The Vol Pass has been a flop for football. The Summer of Smokey has not been well-received. There's a "wait and see" feel around the program right now.

A good September creates excitement and buzz. A lackluster September indicates that fans and media were right to be cautious.

They just need to read VN to see what's wrong with the Vol Pass. It's not well explained and fans don't know if they'll be able to sit beside loved ones and friends

I believe this is a good thing. This puts pressure on the administration. Fans showed up for years and years while the administration crapped the bed. If fans stop showing up the administration will take notice.

and there's varying opinions on what would constitutes a good september.

i've always been one to believe that getting to October still in contention is important. and with playing FL so early for so long and our illustrious recrod against them, September more times than not has been a downer. throw in the fact that of late November has also sucked, there's not been much to buy in to.

i agree with you that we have to start doing better earlier in the schedule. i'm gladd we're now playing FL in game 4 vs. game 2 or 3. but at some point if this program is going to be the type of program we all want/expect, it starts with beating FL more than 1 time every 6 or so years. winning that game makes every other game that much more important, and more relevant to acheiving the goals for the season.

not sure how much that matters for this particular season, but i think being less than 3-1 would leave a bad taste in most people's mouth.

most everyone in the administration has been changed in the last 18-24 months.

the ills of the last 10 years aren't the fault of the new guard necessarily.

and lack of support also hurts recruiting and overall perception of the program. it hurts the ability of the administration to correctly support the athletics program and bring in top notch people.....should a need arise again in the future that is. :)

but, there's no denying, the first thing they will listen to is declines in revenue. but even still, with the revenue sharing that exists in the conference, i don't see TN going broke in the near future.

Yea honestly if we go down to the swamp and play hard and it’s a good game. No one should be that upset with a loss. It’s probably 75/25 we lose/win that game.

If we play hard and Florida wins in a Tennessee/Florida way. There will be angst

Pressure on admin to do what?

The leadership was terrible at UT for years. It was inexcusable. But now there's new leadership top-down and all the marquee sports have the resources to succeed. The facilities are among the country's best, the programs are well-funded, staffs have been upgraded and coaches have everything they've requested. Everything. They just need to win.

agree about the odds...but...

...what he said.

we've got a long and storied history of finding ways to lose to very beatable FL teams. i don't know that going down there and losing on a hail mary would do much for the confidence.

the fan base has been here for all of it, many for 20 years plus, and have seen almost every conceivable way to lose to Florida.

the fan base knows that if this program is turning a corner, it at some point has to win the games it finds itself in position to, especially the big games on the schedule.....something we've struggled mightily at.

so, yeah, if we go down and fight like heck against FL and fall short, really, all that is, is par for the course.

i don't expect to win that game, so it won't change my attitude about the season or what we could ultimately do come December. but i can't tell you losing to FL in a tough game would make me feel "ok". just status quo.

Losing to UF AGAIN will leave a sour taste no matter what, but it won't crash the season. Going 3-1 in September will be viewed positively by most fans and recruits. Recruiting is critical. If we go 2-2 in September, then follow that up with losses to UGA and Bama, most of these "wait and see recruits" aren't going to like what they see.

Everything is about optics. Losing will be bearable if we look like we’re on the same level.
yeah, i think most expect that game is probably an L. just don't get embarassed. but again, no one is going to be "ok" with losing a game we could have won....we've done that a lot the last 6 years. played OU, UF, Bama tough in 2015....still found ways to lose. beat UGA and UF in 2016 and crapped the bed late against teams we could/shoulda beat. the last 10 years is filled with "if's and but's" in that regard.....2013 UGA, 2009 Bama, Doole vs. LSU and UNC...........pick a game against USCe....

"more of the same" would be defined, to me anyway, as continuing to fall short in games you find yourself in position to win.

up by 13 with 5 minutes to go in the Swamp? uh, i expect to win that game. up by 10 agianst top 10 OU in the 4th qtr....i expect to win that.

now, you go down swinging, lose by 4 with the ball in your hands in the opponents territory.......ok, i get heartbroken, but i can admire that type of effort....

anyway, long story short...............the "how" will matter. we all know it. it's not enough to simply say "this record will be good with me" or "losing that game is ok" right now. when the game plays out and you see how you arrive at the result, that will change the narrative.
