Math is hard. ESPN’s preseason FPI ranks the units of a football team based on “expected points added” by that unit. I figure that could reasonably be compared to the actual scoring rank of those units at the end of the season to see how accurate the preseason FPI rankings were. Those comparisons for SEC teams for both the 2017 and 2018 seasons are below, sorted by the net variance. It sort of looks like we need to come up with a new system. jmo.
