As an initial disclaimer, every team in the country notes that they are working harder than they ever have and it’s the best summer ever, still for the Vols, there are some notable gains early. Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano is thicker than he has ever been. The undisputed leader of the Vol offense and team is nearly 220 pounds now after being around 202 to start last season. Guarantano is leading not only throwing sessions but film sessions as well this month. He’s going to the Manning Passing Academy June 27-30. We are told Guarantano has also been a fixture at the first few Vols day camps, hanging out when his class schedule allows.

The weight program has also been good for freshman quarterback Brian Maurer. Maurer has put on nearly 20 pounds since he arrived in January.

Two newcomers on offense who have made an early splash are receiver Jerrod Means and tight end Sean Brown. Brown’s athletic ability for his size has quickly caught people’s eyes, as has Means speed.

Speaking of athletic ability, everyone saw Elijah Simmons’ dunk prior to his arrival and the excitement surrounding his athleticism for a large man. His work ethic has also been noted by observers as well early in his UT tenure. Simmons worked with a personal trainer in Nashville prior to his arrival and arrived in good shape, allowing him to show well early.

Another defensive player who has looked the part and flashed a bit in his two weeks on campus is Roman Harrison. The unheralded recruit was a camp find by Jeremy Pruitt and his staff a year ago. Harrison had a great senior season in a magical state title run. His drive has caught the eyes of his teammates and others in the program the last couple of weeks.

Offensive tackle Darnell Wright arrived a bit heavy, but he’s down 8-10 pounds already in a week and should be at his optimal weight this time next week. Wright might have arrived a little heavier than his goal weight, but he has shown some freakish ability quickly and has flashed in a week of workouts, earning some early praise from his teammates.

I think @Ron Swanson already posted this:

Head coach Jeremy Pruitt spent part of Monday in Nashville speaking at the Tennessee Titans coaches clinic where high school coaches from around the state were in attendance and Pruitt had a clear message for those coaches in attendance: He opened his presentation by telling the coaches that Tennessee’s success will be built with a foundation of players from Tennessee and he then called out his cell phone number, not once but twice, telling the coaches that if they have a player, please call him directly.

Pruitt then proceeded to give a 35 minute dissertation on defensive play, which included a question and answer session. Pruitt ended by again thanking the coaches and inviting them to Knoxville to “talk ball” with his staff and observe practice.

Now, who was the goober running around in some kids recruitment thread talking about how Tennessee coaches didn’t like Pruitt and he alienated them or whatever ?
