The transfer portal will lose its allure. Most of these kids aren't going to get a better spot and only around 20% of P5 transfers are finding a P5 spot. Players think it's a great way to explore their options, and schools have been letting them. But if schools start pulling scholarships behind players, the portal will create a lot of players with no scholarship and nowhere to go.

I made a broad stroke because I was speaking in generalities...the thought was provoked by the Chris Steele situation but wasn't a direct comment on his situation.

But had he stayed close to home both of these transfers wouldn't have happened though.
broad strokes don't work.

he left Florida for a very specific, and really good, reason if i'm being honest. and when he went to Oregon, mom still had a job.

stuff happens.

i think it'll be interesting to see which schools would start pulling scholarships first.....my money is NOT on USCw lol.

the year i moved to KNO and went to Tennessee, my parents and youngest brother moved to Long Island NY, my other brother enrolled at MSU.

kids go off to college all the time. this situation is not special or unique, except that it was at florida and the pitch wasn't as good as the product.....the "situation" with family didn't devleop until after he went to Oregon, and he decided to go home as a result.

we make fun of it because it seems really fickle. but sometimes, circumstance does dictate.

the reason the transfer portal is full is not soley because kids went too far from home and now miss mama.

You've obviously got a different thought process...at no point did I say or imply anything like what you're implying.

Has nothing to do with being homesick or missing family, it's the fact that said family will have to travel to watch your games it's something to think about. Pointing that out isn't downplaying or mocking the circumstances behind his specific transfers.

This. I think next year there will be a steep decline because there's evidence now of all the risks for the kids.

That wasn't an issue before his mom got laid off. So how was he supposed to predict it. Should they all just stay home?

Great point. Unlike the ESD I think the portal has that "new & shiny" sort of thing going on right now.

SC was actually recruiting its own players back, LOL. Whatever they were offering must have worked.

I think most powerhouse programs will start pulling scholarships if they need the spot. The portal benefits the really good players who already know they have interest elsewhere and the players who want to transfer down for PT. The ones with a less impressive resume who think they'll do better at another P5 school might be in for a rude awakening.

"Wasn't an issue" ? Travel from California to Florida (or Oregon) is a burden regardless of employment situation...time, planning, cost...that didn't just "pop up" once she lost her job, her losing the job magnified the impact of it. I have a secure job with good money, and I spend months planning even trips to Asheville (2-3 hours away). I don't have an issue with any of these kids transferring, but at some point there has to be a hard "no" somewhere. What if his mom gets a new job in Texas? He going to be transferring again?

Fulmer's comments on transfers.

“People have always transferred. This has made it much more public because you put your name out there"

I don’t think it’s been a bad thing at all. It’s probably a really good thing for an athlete that maybe wants to transfer down or get a fresh start or those kinds of things.

“It’s a little bit too easy, in my mind. The negative side of it: Does it encourage young people to fight through a tough time that we’ve all in athletics been taught to do all of our life? But, generally, I think it’s been good.”

The portal has worked out for UT. We've trimmed rosters by losing some players the coaches were content to lose. And we've picked up a few players that filled gaps. But UT Compliance warns players of the risk and tells them their spot isn't guaranteed once they enter the portal. And at least one UT coach has taken it a step further and told a player to decide "in or out" because it was impacting the team. I think we'll see more of that.

and as parents I feel like it should be pointed out "if you are more than 3 hours away chances are we miss most your games, even the home ones." These 17 & 18 year olds shouldn't be allowed to be making these decisions "on their own" it's why we see this new trend of OVER A THOUSAND athletes (already) trying to transfer via the portal since October...that's insane.
implication...........?

On topic sidenote:
Hubbs and Price suggested Alabama had been "tampering" when it came to their latest transfer (to them).
Kid had entered the portal with a "do not contact" note? That he not only knew where he intended to go but that he also knew he was guaranteed Bama was going to take him. Which couldn't happen without impermissible contact..

Idk any of the details and not my statement. If they were being serious though, even more proof that the NCAA rules are useless.

I have thought about that before. but wonder what kind of backlash they may receive. Just a gut feeling, but I think most will let them ride out the semester.

wow...

I wasn't implying it was a "missing momma" situation. I was IMPLYING actually, no I'm very directly saying it isn't a decision a kid should make without parent involvement. IN MY OPINION
either way. you just said they shouldn't be allowed to, and that being that far from home is the reason we see so many kids in the portal. that's just not true....whether it's your opinion or not, that's just not THE reason they're all in there.

and for this kid, there were specific reasons for both transfers. i don't think he went to FL or Oregon with the intention of transferring. i don't know what kind of support structure he has at all at home. be it good or bad, i doubt he made either decision totally alone.

no one disagrees that the parents should be involved in helping the kid make the decision...to go in the first place or to transfer out.

and i think it goes w/out saying that had he gone to USCw in the first place, that neither transfer happens...lol.
