Warrior may get passed up this fall

Boy I HOPE that's an issue we have, and not because Warrior is that bad...but because the younger guys are that good.

I mean we also still got Trevon Flowers, Baylen Buchanan, Theo Jackson, Shawn Shamburger, Maleik Gray, Labruzza, Bailey, Davis...

Secondary is packed with talent and youth. Warrior & Buchanan are the only seniors in the group too.

i think this is part of the problem. you start looking at a lot of those kids in that 17 class, several listed from that class, and they've not been able to find a spot and stick. and it feels like it's at multiple positions....they've moved guys around, tried them at other postions to see if they can find a way they can help and so far, most haven't.

there's several in that group you named and several others at other spots on the roster that we need to "find it". if for no other reason that depth.

but imo, if we're going to do anything of consequence this year or next, it's going to be due in large part to some of those guys becoming something they've not been so far.

I think our starters in the secondary are Taylor, Thompson, Warrior, Buchanan and then Flowers (if 100%) or possibly Theo Jackson.

I don't know if any of the freshmen come in and start, at least not right away. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if at least 1 or 2 of them sees a lot of snaps especially as the season progresses. I think body type and pure athlete wise Beasley is a better fit in the 3-2-5 we run where one of the 5 is essentially a LB hybrid type there is talks Warrior could see more time there if Jaylen or Fields emerges as a reliable safety option...and that would be IMO a great thing.

I'd love to see Flowers & Jaylen as our true safety guys, Warrior near the line and Taylor/Thompson being islands. I'm excited about this group more than any other on the team.

How about that Haynes news? Pretty big imo. Would love to be like other schools and let a couple elite QBs battle it out. Sounds like May is truly almost over.

Pruitt also said something but took responsibility. Everything seems like it's either-or on here.

Maybe some weren't bought in the way they needed to be. But maybe Pruitt doesn't believe that makes them a lost cause. Give them an ultimatum and a chance to prove it. Different circumstances but Jennings got his.
100% speculation of course.
I agree with your speculation. I drew the same conclusions from the information we have about the situation.

What are the tremendous strides? I haven’t read many of the off-season puff pieces yet.
Go look at our ol this spring as an example. All of our undersized ol are over 300 lbs now with what looks to be good weight. We will at least look like an sec line this fall. Which should lead to playing more like one instead of having 280 lb guards.

Ubben’s a good writer. He hasn’t earned prophet status.

Fair enough on Ubben. Though I'll say this - every time writers, who see things in person and review tons of practice film, come out and tell the fans we just aren't very talented atm, they are being brutally honest. 247 was really pounding home how much we lacked talent these past 2 years and most didn't want to believe it...but they were spot on.

Now...I read his mailbag. I really didn't take it as him saying we are completely lacking. He did mention Pruitt has recruited well and to wait and see if he can now develop that talent. He's not saying this is a 5 win team...just that the coaches really have their work cut out for them based on what he's seen. Fair enough. Go earn those millions, staff.

Yeah, I think Bryant just used his Grad transfer to lose the starting job again...I'm not sold on him as a SEC QB, his lone season as the guy at Clemson wasn't anything to write home about.

I agree about Georgia & USC being cyclical mostly. I don't know about Florida, they have had quite an odd off-season for it to still just be May and I'm honestly not sure what to expect with the amount of new starters they'll put out.

His lone full season he had a measly 131 QBR and 7.0 YPA...in that Clemson offense that's not very good. For context: JG had a 141 qbr behind our ol. Lawrence had a 157 qbr in that (basically) same offense as Bryant.

Bryant faced 2 SEC defenses his year of starting - 14 pts vs Auburn and 6 vs Bama. Played A&M last year and did put up 28 that game and 12 YPA. By far his best game.

Yeah, them upsetting Wiscy last year gave me real pause in labeling this as a 'should-win'.

Their returning production (O, D, Total)
BYU 69% (48th); 57% (85th); 63% (65th)

Tanner Mangum is graduated, but their QB of the future is a sophomore that had a 12:3 TD/Int ratio last year (although to be fair, he racked up most of his TD's against Hawaii, UMass, and Western Michigan).

Idk, the applicable word for BYU is "Solid" to me. And we're the opposite of "solid" right now, with churning at LB and along the OL, and replacing basically the entire DL. We're going to need our athletes to make plays.

To me there's 1 simple reason we shouldn't mark this as a gimme - they like their OL and DLs, we do not. Trench concerns are kind of a big deal imo. Their QB is legit too.

So "fans" bemoaning a loooooooong rebuild where we won't be competitive with our rivals for at least 5 years will stop in June? Excellent!
I would think that recruits don't give a rats a$$ about what fans are saying. Most of them are just in it for the opportunity to go pro even though that dream is far from realistic for 99% of them. I don't doubt opposing coaches are trying to make us look bad but that goes on all over the country. Recruiting is a cut throat game. Winning will take care of our problems.
