Yep. We’ve simply got to buy in on a coach and give him a long runway.

Tennessee’s best years also coincided with remarkable coaching stability. Some fans still can’t get that through their thick skulls.

Yeah eventually coaches are going to stop wanting to come here. I just don’t get who people think we’re going to hire. We’ve been through 3 coaching searches now and proven time and again we aren’t going to shell out the big money needed for an elite coach.

Pruitt is a young coach, great coordinator and good recruiter. However, he’d never been a head coach until last year. It’s going to take him a while to get this all figured out. So far I think he’s shown that he’s willing to change and adapt but that will take time and patience from the fans

Mizzou is an automatic loss until we prove otherwise. They’ve beat us 50-17 the last two years and Odom has proven that he can develop players pretty well

We’ve averaged 10-15 spots ahead of them in recruiting even during these last few historically low years. Also, they lose a lot this year, especially on OL and an NFL QB. Nobody should be penciling this in as an automatic loss, and if it’s a blow out again this year, might as well hang it up.

Depends on what the source meant by rebuild. I agree 5 yrs is too much to be in on 9 or 10 win seasons kinda talent.
But say 90's era talk of a toss up for making NC games, that's a legitimate discussion.
It’s probably going to take 4 years. We’re far behind everyone else in the east as far as established programs.

Now Pruitt could go out there and kick @ss in the fall and prove me wrong but I think 7 wins is about what to expect this coming year. Might see a small step back in year 3 due to schedule, but then a huge jump forward in year 4

Recruiting. Doesn’t. Matter.

Mizzou competed in every game this year. They return a lot of good, young talent and kelly Bryant is good enough to keep things going for them.

Coaching and development means so much more than stars. We as Tennessee fans should realize that by now lol. Pruitt’s first real recruiting class isn’t even fully on campus yet.

We are already there in terms of coaches not wanting to come here. I don’t mind the immediate results of the Schianomo but I think we will suffer the aftershocks of that for along time. I’ve wondered if recruiting is hampered by it indirectly. People telling recruits Pruitt ain’t long for Knoxville...

“Crazy, entitled fanbase with big stadium and zero patience looking for super coach to flip 2-star roster and win SEC championship while playing UGA, Bama and UF each year along with one away game against a team competing for the national title from another power 5 conference. Super coach gets one year to land top-5 signing class, two years to win 8 games and maybe 4 to win SEC championship. Super coach must show at least two win improvement each year and win every game in which average recruiting ranking of UT roster exceeds that of opposing team. No exceptions.”

They got a future NFL QB from Clemson, one with enough shake and bake to offset mediocre OL. Won't be easy.

My mood on Tennessee football right now:

"I wish a buck was still silver, it was back when the country was strong..."

Lol. Then why does Pruitt put literally every spare minute he has into it? And assembled a staff built specifically to recruit well?

“Tennessee needs a talent upgrade. … It’s going to take five years to get it done. I think Jeremy Pruitt will get it done because he’s a good enough coach and recruiter to get it done. But it will take that long. The reason is, there’s other people in the league already getting it done. And they have no margin for error because they play Alabama, Georgia and Florida every year.”

“The question is, why did they finish so poorly last year? They played like crap down the stretch against Missouri and Vanderbilt. They’ve lost three in a row to Vanderbilt — that’s unacceptable.”

“Jeremy lucked out getting rid of Tyson Helton and hiring Jim Chaney. I think he’s the best, most proven offensive coordinator in the league. I think Jim is outstanding. If Jeremy will leave him alone, Jim will be fine.”
Pfft. Source was misquoted.
What he actually said was
"to reach an elite level roster, Pruitt needs until May of year 2."

Recruiting always matters, but I agree about the development. We had zero S&C or development last 2 years under Jones, and that had a lot to do with on field results the last couple years. The good news is that this season will make 2 years under what looks to me to be some of the best S&C and development in the country. They still don’t return enough to replace what they lost. We better have closed the gap some. I’m not crazy enough to pencil in Missouri as a W, but we better hope we’re past the point of penciling them in as a L.

Perfect. This is why we’ve got to give Pruitt time. Let all of that dissipate a bit and, crazy idea here, see if he can build an actual program. Not the butch jones’ poop castle that was held up by probably the greatest QB to ever play at Tennessee.

Look at the results of fanbases that were patient with coaches: spurrier at SC, Stoops at KY, Pinkel at Mizzou, and Dabo at CU. We need to stop pointing to Saban and Kirby as proof that coaches can change things immediately. Kirby inherited a winning program stacked with talent and Saban had already proven himself on the college level.

Pruitt is entering his second year as a head coach ever at any level. There are going to be significant growing pains as he inherits a program that is a shell of itself, trying to rebuild when the SEC is at its best. I’m amazed that it isn’t consensus that he should get at least 4 years here

How would we be past that point? We just got blown out by them at home and now have to go play them in Columbia.

They don’t recruit like Bama, they are not in position to just reload all they’ve lost without taking a step back. We will take a step forward at every position next year except maybe DL.

Do you not have faith the Pruitt can develop players?
I'm not a gear head, so this analogy could probably be better, but I view it kind of like this:

We are sitting at the starting line in a 1998 Dodge Viper. Our opponents are sitting there in a 2017 Charger Hellcat, a 2018 Shelby GT350 and a 2019 Camaro ZL1. Now, our crew chief can change out our engine and do everything in his power to make our vehicle the best it can be. And he may be the best in the world at it. But our opponents crew chiefs, who really don't need to do that much to be better than us, are nonetheless still tweaking their machines to make them even better than they already are.

It's a lengthy, steep climb ahead of us to be able to compete in the race.

Edited: changed our vehicle to more closely fit the analogy...because we were bad as hell in 1998!

I think the biggest issue is that we won’t shell out the money (that way easily have) for a proven high level head coach. Basically like texas AM did.
