Our worst mistake ever was letting Rodney Garner get away to Georgia. Most of the players on the 1998 NC team were recruited by Garner and look how Georgia's recruiting has improved since he went there. He could recruit all areas and could close the deal on good players. We seem to hold our breath until signing day.
I think if we got Will Muschamp as a HC that his first hire should be Rodney Garner and get the Vols back to being a force to be reckoned with instead of the Conference Joke.

Worst mistake was thinking one BCS title would bring an endless supply of top talent. The UT coaches got complacent, and it has caught up to them.

That's giving Rodney too much credit. I think Garner was only here for two years and was primarily just responsible for the famed '97 Georgia trio of Lewis, Grant and Coleman....As Peerless Price pointed out in KNS a few weeks ago the Georgia pipeline isn't the only one to dry up....We used to do very well in Ohio as well and there was a time when a WR as good as Patrick Turner would have never left the state.

Didn't do the Dawgs much good vs Bama recently and BTW, what is the Georgia/Florida record over the last 17 years???

2/15???

but but but Trooper Taylor...

I listened to an at length radio interview with Oklahoma's Switzer recently, he said back when a program could have all the coaches they wanted, he had eight full time recruiters on the road year round, they never coached any at all, they were recruiters only.

NCAA rules to level the playing/recruiting field are working.

He was a great recruiter for us, but he was only here in 1996 and 1997 so saying he recruited "most of the players" on the 1998 team isn't quite true.

were talking 10 years is the past...turnover is very high in the coaching world with promotions and such. if he was still here i doubt he would still be playing such a big role in recruiting...sure he could close deals and such but like everyone has said times change and it's part of the college football realm

I would certainly like to have had him back this last recruiting year and I certainly wish Tennessee was in the same position as Georgia even with the Alabama loss.
