and that's fair. i just don't buy the "we have talent, and that alone means we should beat xyz" narrative. the talent, in and of itself, is still an issue.

Yea there’s a million different things that go into it too. Especially where our lack of talent it.

You can have a mediocre roster but if you have a great QB or Pass rush it can mask a lot of things.

For instance i don’t think Missouri’s roster as a whole is much different than ours but they had Drew Locke and he compensated for a lot of their limitations.

Wegmans is the retailer I'd love to have in Knoxville. It's one of the very few consolations of having to travel up North for work.
People up north love them some Wegman’s. I was in Buffalo or Rochester or somewhere up there for work, and someone found out I had never been in the area before. They told me I needed to go to Wegman’s. Great, always looking for recommendations. “What is it,” I asked. “A grocery store,” they responded. “Oh.”

I never made it to one, but they sure are passionate about it.

Not only that, but all those Missouri players have been playing in the same system for their entire careers. I know Dooley changed some stuff - but he mostly kept what was there in place.

A less talented team can beat the more talented team if it has great coaching, works harder, and has fewer mental errors.

We only had all three of those for two weeks out of the year last year.

Make no mistake due to poor development and attrition we're not there "yet" in talent, but anyone who is preaching a lack of talent like these guys can't play is just flat out wrong. The guys on roster should be competitive with Vandy and Missouri with adequate coaching...now
i don't have an issue with that at all. agree. just when we get to saying we had this rating over the last 4 years compared to MO, we should beat them always......i draw the line there......

the fact that that's our peer group, really, is what's telling.......

that said, i do think based on the 19 class, things are pointing back in the right direction....some really really good talent coming in with this class.

but it's just one class, and they're freshmen. not sure how much of a difference one should EXPECT that to make right from the jump.......i expect to the top of that class will flash, and we'll have a couple, if not a few more, be solid/significant contributors....this year.

Yeah, don't think this goes against anything I've said. I don't expect a miracle with poor line play in a conference of trenches.
I do expect to see improvement. There is no reason not to expect stronger and better developed players to play as such at other positions.
There's a difference between expecting miracles and watching for signs of improvement.. or lack of.
agreed.

yep, which is why the OL and DL being where they are is such a big deal for this team, right now. you can be average on the OL, but with solid to good QB play or great RB or WR's....you can work around an average OL. we haven't really had that....so who knows what we look like if the OL gets a little better....along with the rest of the offense getting the benefit of not only year 2 s&c, but an upgrade at OC, QB coach, and WR coach......

the DL....little different b/c we just haven't seen any of them be overly productive. so it's just an unkown.

long story short, i agree. but the one place you can't be god awful is the LOS.......which is why think most still have some anxiety about 2019....we're not sure what we got up front...but we know what we've had..........

I was just saying that 7 wins isn't crazy, and should be the floor not the ceiling for next season.

There's really no excuse not to compete and beat 3-4 of the SEC East teams we face, then you get 4 out of conference games and we're left with 3 hard matchups (Georgia, Florida, Bama) and this year I think we pulled a beatable 2nd west team in MSU...would have rather gotten Arkansas, but at least it's not A&M or LSU.

Especially when we factor in "returning production" and realize how much the other East teams with lesser recruit rankings lost closer to half their starters from last year.

I just wonder what would have happened if Dobbs, Barnett and Cam hadn't been the type of self driven guys they are where those Butch teams would have been.

Dobbs on his own won us a few games.
yup. throw AK in there too. i would imagine Butch may not have made it past 2015 had Dobbs and Kamara not been on the roster. jmo. we already lost in heart breaking fashion to OU and FL, got drubbed by ARK at home....and were in the middle of getting our azzes kicked by GA before the light came on and we pulled out a giant comeback against them. we lose that game going away, like we did in the first half, i'm not sure he survives 2015.

Wegmans has made there way down to VA now. Imagine the biggest and nicest grocery store you've ever been to that also has a Total Wine and More, and also a full restaurant and bar inside. Or at least thats what the one in Charlottesville, VA is like. It's pretty nice.

7 wins definitely isn't crazy. Should have won 7 last fall. Anything less this fall will be very disappointing. Coaches typically make a big jump in year two, and I know this is a bigger rebuild that most, but I think this fall is going to be very enjoyable for Vol fans. We're not going to win 10 games but I think we'll be very competitive in at least 10 and win 7-9.

yep. another good point. and another reason why, while i expect to see improvement this season, i'm not going all in with the ultimatiums on what should or should not be reasonably expected, short term.

i think if by year 4 or 5, this program resembles in any way what year 4 and 5 looked like under CBJ, then all bets are off.

i just don't see that happening with the way he's put this staff together, and the types of players he's recruiting.

i don't know that means we win any championships by then or not, but i just find it hard to believe we're going to be stuck as a 4 or 5 win program.

and given where we are currently, that might mean a championship run is a little bit further off in the distance....but we really won't know that until we see how this cycle and next turn out.

either way, barring a jonesesque landslide, i'm willing to get to year 4 or 5 and see what it looks like......

I’m all for getting a few in the Nashville area.
