Our fan base is pretty embarrassing, really.

About a game? Losing sucks, but it doesn't make them a cross-eyed hillbilly retard that should kill himself...

I don't know why I bothered. It came across as a lovey dovey feel good lifetime piece, but I really just wanted to get across that criticizing play is totally different than criticizing the person.
Who did I call a cross eyed hillbilly retard that should kill himself?

You're right, the fanbase is embarrassing.

The fanbase that is clearly okay with mediocre coaching and play on the field is embarrassing.

Go coach soccer or some other little league sport where everybody is good and deserves a trophy at the end.

That's not my point. Point is to keep the criticism where it belongs. If you have to make changes, you make changes. Fulmer's time is pretty much up, it seems, but he should go out as a lifelong Tennessee guy, not some idiot that should tie himself to a bag of puppies and jump in the river.

Your right, the fans are idiots. All 106,000 should just show up hold hands and sing combaya.

I'm sorry, fans are paying big money to support this team. They should expect a certain level of competitiveness.

You know what. Fan is an abbreviation of fanatical. They play football, we pay to watch. If you buy a car wouldn't you expect it to run?

Not you. That's just the kind of stuff Crompton has been called lately. I was getting at you probably wouldn't call somebody that to their face. Anonymity (that's right, isn't it?) has enabled folks to talk about others in ways they never would if their real name was tacked on the end.

Telling him he's not a good quarterback is different, and not exactly out of line considering the play he's shown.

NO, leave the puppies...

I'm kidding...seriously. I don't want any trouble! :)

That's a bit of a leap.

Truthfully though the team's play is far more embarrassing that the fans.

Negative. We should expect a certain level of competitiveness. No arguing that. If we need to fire someone, bench another, etc...it has to happen. But you don't have to tar and feather 'em on the way out.

For a group of folks that pride ourselves on being more welcoming and all-around better fans that opposing schools (see: Alabama), the actions of many are pretty embarrassing . . .

As you have already seen, the venom gets turned on you for making a comment like this.

But I agree with you 100% and I suspect a lot of others do, some of whom just don't feel like getting bashed for speaking up.

I just find it hard to believe that after 4 weeks we go from supporting Crompton and company as players and people, to treating them like their some kind of invalid that should be set out to die in the elements.

The little rant probably sounds whiny, but I wouldn't talk about any of you like that, you probably wouldn't say something like that about me....you definitely wouldn't say it to a person's face, so why say it about players just because we're anonymous on the internet?[/QUOTE]

i'll take a shot at that ...

because it is safe. crompton is, what, 21 years old, 6'3" and 220#, takes a licking from SEC DBs and laughs it off. who has the cajones to step up to him in person and call him "cross eyed crapton"?

Yeah I'll just leave it be, I guess. Once we get through the season, we'll spend the offseason making fun of every problem other teams have, and every comment they make on tidefans and catpause, like our crap doesn't stink.

I don't have as much of an issue on Vol Nation. There's some garbage thrown around, but it's fairly mild. Where you get the stuff that riles me up is in comment sections on other websites (Govolsxtra). Folks that proclaim to be lifelong fans somehow become able to discern mental retardation from poor QB play.

For a group of folks that pride ourselves on being more welcoming and all-around better fans that opposing schools (see: Alabama), the actions of many are pretty embarrassing. We make fun of others' plight all year, deriding every silly 'chicken little' thread posted on their boards...then we turn around and have a complete meltdown on our players and coaches.

I understand if you feel that Fulmer is past his prime and needs to retire.

I understand Crompton has played poorly and we need to look at other options.

I understand this team's performance has let us all down.

What I don't understand is how fans, who supposedly support our players, can constantly badmouth our team. Calling Crompton "Cross Eyed Crapton," etc and Fulmer whatever new word in the long line of insults that come up, is outrageous. Makes us look like a bunch of idiots.

Criticize the play, but don't belittle the athletes that WE recruited to play for us. They didn't have to come here. We recruited them, and now we're gonna sit around and bad mouth them? What a joke.

Sorry for the rant, but I find it hard to believe a true fan of the program would talk about 18-22 year olds like that. I'm upset about being 1-3. It kills me. But I don't choose to treat other people with that kind of disrespect. It's easy to be a fan when you win every game. It's easy to talk about our guys like they're God's gift. You can tell by reading and hearing stuff from folks that they just want to ride the wave when the sun is out.

:clapping: :eek:k: Very good post JW. Loved it!!!

Generally what you say is to the point, rather than baseless insults. If you wanted to say that, based on the last 4 games, Crompton is a pretty terrible quarterback, then you could say that. Much of what I read from you is along that line.

the obvious is when something isnt working it needs a change. Is it poor coaching that we cannot get any offensive production from our players at the key positions? One of the best o-lines we have had and yet we have already given up more sacks than all of last year and i havent seen so many offensive penalties from the linemen.. ever. We have lacked at special teams for years and still not much has changed. Our defense is the good old safe play and give it up big underneath. We have been the worst tackling team IMO in the SEC for years. Just shows a lack of the fundamentals. I just dont understand how heads arent rolling.

t just shows how undisciplined we are and a lack of coaching.

One of the things that bother me JW is fans who sit around yell, we need to fire Fulmer, we need to fire Cutcliffe, we need to fire Chavis". Cut goes to Duke ( which is 3-1 btw ) and Clawson comes. In the off season everyone's talking," new blood, we are going to be better, etc." Now after four games it, " they need to send Clawson back to were they got him from". Then people yelled, " we need to get Crompton on the field and bench Ainge". Now they are wishing Ainge had red shirted his freshmen yr. I'll be called a Fulmerite, like backing the coach of the team you like to watch play is a bad thing. I guess I always thought that if you liked a football team that you stick with them thru the good and the bad, guess I'm just stupid for thinking that way.
I don't like the fact that we are were we are, but it is what it is, and behind the team 100% no matter what happens.

Being the 13th ranked qb out of a 12 team league will do that to you.

He is 14th now.. behind both lsu qb and auburn I guess...As far as this thread I understand why people are tired of how the fan base is acting, but I mean people are mad...we all want to win... the day I get on a board like this and everybody is ok with 1-3 will be the day I quit going to ut football games

Yeah... Lord forbid that some of you should be expected to have some class and human decency.

The OP is exactly right. What kind of fan much more human being kicks someone who is probably hurting as badly as those guys are.

Our commitment is that we go to/watch the games. Their commitment is they invest a huge part of their life and energy to the team.

Crompton's play has been bad but is his situation more worthy of the kind of contempt and personal attacks he's getting or sympathy? He's waited his turn and by all accounts worked hard. He was hyped and has talent. He grew up dreaming of playing for the Vols... and for YOU. Now he's watching his dreams go up in smoke and rather than having the decency to feel badly for him you have "fans" (self-centered jerks is probably a more accurate description) mocking his name? Condemning him as a 22 year old for doing the best he can to handle a very, very publicly personal failure?

Yes. The behavior of alot of Vol fans is very, very embarrassing.
