My glass of scotch and I were cleaning up the kitchen late tonight and I thought I'd look for some music on my iPhone, something old I hadn't listened to in a long time. Landed on a tribute album from 20 years ago called Return of the Grievous Angel, 13 covers of Gram Parsons songs by a stellar lineup of artists. Just nicely topped off an already nice evening with the fam. Highly recommend.

Yikes. Scrolled the 273 "Best Available" players left and not a single Vol. Really hope they're wrong. What an absolute twilight zone time to be a Vol fan. Nothing makes sense.

Literally baffles me how they refuse to give cam a legit WR. His best ones have been a queen Latifah stand in and a glorified punt returner after Steve Smith early on in cams career.

Doesn't McCaffrey sort of double as a slot? At least I thought that was their thought when they drafted him.

But I did think that was an odd pick. I get wanting a solid backup, but a 3rd rounder with great arm talent? Weird fit, especially for Grier. Or maybe they will use him in a trade.

I was at a work event last night talking football. It became clear to me (once again) how little legitimate respect the casual fan has for Tennessee football. There were lots of jokes about the team. Not the kind of mean jokes of a rival. But the sort of gentle laughs people used to make about the Cubs and other notable sports franchises known for their losing. I declared to the crowd I thought the Tennessee-Georgia game could be a good one with the way the schedule sets up, and people just laughed and said that guy is such an optimist! We have next to no respect, guys. Gotta grind and go earn it. Can’t fire coaches year after year to get there either. No quick fixes.

They’ve drafted 4 receivers in the top 2 rounds over the last 5 drafts

Hardly “refusing to get Cam a legit WR”

I spent some time looking at the change in FPI from the end of last season to ESPN’s preseason this year. The FPI is calculated based on a neutral field matchup. Earlier this year Phil Steele did a 5-part series where he analyzed team performance over the past decade in order to project the home field advantage for each FBS team in 2019. In analyzing our schedule this year I used 50% of those values along with the FPI to project wins for 2019.

I also looked at how much ESPN’s math suggested a team might improve or regress from the end of last season to this season. ESPN thinks we will be the most improved team on our schedule this year and it’s not even close. Our 2018 team would have had a tremendous struggle against our schedule this year but, anchoring bias aside, indications are that we are likely to see significant improvement against everyone on our schedule this year, partly because of our own improvement, and partly because many of our opponents are expected to regress.

I’m not one to concede a loss before we play the game so this analysis suggests we should have at least 5 sure-fire wins and perhaps 7 toss-ups. Fans thinking we win 6 think we win 1 of those tossups. I expect most will settle somewhere between 6 and 10. 8 seems realistic but the more cautious will probably shave a game to 7 just to be safe. I’m reaching for the prize of 10 and all the good things that will flow from that achievement. Anything short of that will not be a surprise. It would just be par for the course. I’ve never began a season without being wildly hopeful and I’m getting too old to change that now. jmo.

From ESPN:
One problem the polls -- and humans in general -- have is that they fail to divorce themselves from win-loss records. That's a problem when judging conferences, since the majority of every team's games are against other teams in its conference. That leads to guaranteed losses and the appearance that conferences are more similar than they actually are. Because FPI is judging teams' performances with their opponents' strength in mind, it has no problem believing that the SEC is that much better than everyone else.

And if we look at perhaps the most surprising inclusion -- Tennessee -- it's easy to see why the Volunteers have flown up our board. Tennessee is one of just three FBS schools to return 10 starters on offense (and it brings back 17 overall), including quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who posted a solid QBR of 67.4 last season. Even though Tennessee struggled on offense overall last season, teams that bring back that much talent tend to undergo significant improvement from one year to the next. The Vols also rank highly in recruiting over the past four years.

Purely a gut feeling.... we boom today.

In the interest of full disclosure my gut is about as accurate as the weatherman, but I feels it.

yeah....i like Grier as a player. i don't like not trying to give this offense some more weapons. he's never had bonafide talent at the WR spot. wasted 1st rd pick on Benjamin. Funchess was serviceable, but was basically the same guy, neither are there now. Ted Ginn Jr you could argue was the biggest threat he's had. they didn't try to keep Steve Smith.

Gregg Olsen is the best thing he's had. I like DJ Moore, and think he's gonna be really good.

but the offense in general is gonna suck. and Cam is gonna get killed, nad they'll run him out of town eventually......whether they mean to or not.

and this tells me they're not going to to go all in when it's time for a new deal.

They’ve spent more draft capital to try to get him weapons than anything else, and it’s not particularly close.

Far far cry from refusing to get him weapons

2018: DJ Moore 1st round
2017: Curtis Samuel 2nd round
2016: no WR
2015: Devin Funchess 2nd round
2014: kelvin Latifah 1st round.

So when it’s all said and done they drafted two borderline TEs and a mini cordarelle Patterson. I’ll give them credit on DJ Moore tho.

In what way is that good? Even if one of the freshman or Tatum or whoever surpassed him, it’s safe to assume he would be a decent option for depth.

I don’t see how you can spin losing a full time starting OL as a positive. It may not wind up hurting really but i definitely don’t think it’s good.

Bad attitudes and lack of effort kill teams. Not a difficult concept.
