To be clear, I think suspending a right to vote during serving of a prison sentence is a reasonable part of suspending the convicted person's civil rights.

Post-incarceration, I have a hard time justifying why they can't then vote, since their rights have been restored.

But, post-incarceration, as a preventive measure, there is a rational basis to continue not to allow them to possess a firearm.

Prison really isn't a positive thing, but it is a necessity.

I think if you are a tax paying citizen who's not incarcerated, you should have the right to vote. Low level offenders paid their time in prison.

Part of the punishment for being convicted of a felony is not being able to vote. You may walk free again but that is a burden that must follow them forever. And voting is every much a crucial right guaranteed to us in the Constitution as owning the firearm of our choice, if not more important. You give up both when you commit a felony.

That being said, I think a big problem with our criminal justice system is the fact people pay for their crimes regardless what the were for life. If a person is sentenced to x number of years and he completes that sentence all (and I mean all) rights should be restored upon their release. No registries, no restrictions and no disclosure. If the crime is so heinous that an individual needs to pay for it the rest of their life they should be in prison for life.

If you go to your county jail and pull the list of inmates who are pretrial or presentencing for felonies, and look at their charges, you will see why you don't want them to have guns.

If their crimes are that bad they should never get out of prison. Once a person has paid their debt to society they should have a clean slate.

I tend to question whether someone with a reduced sentence because a plea deal (accepting shorter time for a guilty plea or a lesser charge) was easier on the prosecutor or someone with an early release because of overcrowding has really paid his time.
