And it is not unique to the Braves.
There are far more bad bullpens than good ones.
Which is interesting given that more teams don’t let their starters go as long as they used to. Seems like the worst possible time for bullpens to **** the bed. Maybe there’s a correlation?
That's what's so ironic about it. Bullpens seem to be as bad as ever at the same time there's a huge premium, bigger than there ever has been, on having a great one.
It seemed like there was a period 4-8 years ago where most teams, even a lot of bad teams, had a collection of 2-3 bullpen arms that you basically had to assume you wouldn't get runs off of if the entered the game. That doesn't seem to be as common as it used to be. A lot of those guys have simply flamed out or gotten hurt. Almost none of these dudes, except outliers like Kimbrel and Chapman, last long. And ironically Kimbrel can't find a suitor.
I mean, just naming some guys offhand...
Andrew Miller is a shell of himself
Betances is hurt
Rosenthal got hurt/shell of himself
Venters got hurt/shell of himself
Knebel is hurt
Melancon had a run where he was good, now he sucks
Britton is now awful after a 2-3 year run
Glen Perkins awful after 2 year run
I hate to predict things like this, but I wonder if a guy like Josh Hader's run of dominance is nearly over. Hard thrower, max effort, wipeout stuff, now in his 3rd season.
