See the thing is before Barnes went and ran his mouth UCLA was the only school anyone could argue looked bad in this situation.
Depends on your perspective I guess.

If you think Barnes is a good coach and TN is fortunate to still have him, then this matters less and less.

If you think Barnes is overrated and just good enough to field teams that can get in the tourney, and that TN could do better, then it matters more and more.

In the end results will dictate, as they always have.

It's not like our expectations suddenly changed. He's built a program that's finished in the top two in the conf twice and been to two conf title games and b2b NCAA tourneys.

Did we not expect him to maintain and build on that before this?

Rhetorical question. Of course we did.

All this is, is fuel for those that don't care for him should he fail...

If he succeeds, then I guess everybody wins?

Your idea of the PR department is the Gestapo? Says something. 🤔

Oops you’ve hit Reductio ad Hitlerum which means you’ve clearly lost the debate.

Low expectations. We'll probably be picked by the media to finish 13th in the conference and you know what that means. They won't know what hit them. jmotifwiw.

Does anyone predict a total conference ranking in football? Maybe SDS. Lindsey, Steele, etc I believe go by division. But I agree, we'll be ~6th just ahead of Vandy in many picks. 3rd to 5th in many others. 2nd to 4th in 2020. From there, it's on us to decide.

I hope to god we finish at least 3rd. So tired of being a shizzy team in an even shizzier division. Nobody respects the SECE. To be less than 3rd in it is just sad to all outsiders.

My perspective on Barnes as a coach has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not I think what he said was dumb. I think he’s a great coach and will continue to win games here. Still think what he said was dumb, and my evidence is the negative publicity it created and the subsequent arguments within the fan base. Not hard to follow.

your words produce negative publicity? Hey, don’t say that again. Probably wasn’t smart to begin with.
Agreed. Would have been better to phrase those comments a million different ways.

But that's a function of the hot take culture we live in, not an actual referendum on our program or what Barnes actually thinks about ut. Something he spoke on, at length, during the PC.

but hasn't been talked about at all here, Twitter, finebaum, ESPN, or whatever other media/social media outlet that gains more from the reaction than the whole truth...

Rick Barnes, bless his heart, is old enough to know that dogs don't crap where they sleep.

You don't tell the world that if your dream girl would have only put out that you'd be with her, but she wouldn't so you settled on who you're already with.

I think we're in the same page... Mostly... Lol

All that is fair. On a personal level I don’t care about what he said, but without totally separating from the public sphere - there is too much negativity out there for me not to view what he said as stupid and unnecessary.

That's fine. And I agree, it was definitely unnecessary. I just don't care cause I feel pretty confident in everything he said... Not just the Twitter hot take.

And I can't control the rest.

It's frustrating obviously.... That people think he really doesn't want to be here lol.

But whatever.... People gonna do what people do.

My only issue with what Rick Barnes said is this. If it was only about the buyout, then why the raise up to the third highest in the nation, unless, it's also about the money. The rest is just realizing what you just said out loud and trying to iron out the wrinkles you realize you just made. Never tell your girlfriend she's the hottest girl you could get, she'll soon realize you've got your eyes out for something better, if only for the thrill of flirtation, unless you can upgrade.

Gary Parrish said he didn’t think he had ever heard a coach say something like that. He said he would never criticize transparency. But he said it obviously ruffled feathers in Knoxville and certainly made UCLA look dumb.
And that's fair...

I think he wants to be here and really enjoys it here, but he did straight up say if the $$ was there then he would’ve left. So, he doesn’t want to be here quite as much as everyone may have thought. It’s a pride thing. More confirmation that UT men’s hoops isn’t a true blue blood / destination job. That’s not something you want to hear from your current HC.
