It doesn’t even matter. Not all coaches abs ADs see eye to eye. Not the end of the world even if they don’t.

Further, it's being said that it doesn't matter.

Fundamentally, I just disagree with idea of acceptance without having all the facts. So I went and watched the press conference and made up my own mind.

Guys, Barnes is just too honest for a lot of posters on this board. He is our coach for another 5 or so years and, I for one, am very happy that he is still here.

I watched it. All put together, it softens things some but he did still say it.
Been going around news and fan sites, anywhere where comments can be left.
Some media members are complimenting his honesty

Most "regular people" are shocked that he said it. Think it was dumb.

Rivals are using it as ammo (expected, their our rivals)

The people that find it as "nothing" seem to be TN fans.

Hate to say but with it only being TN fans labeling it as nothing.. I understand people accusing you of having a pre-set narrative but so far, it appears they do also.

But TN fans are really the only ones I care about. And in a month, no one outside of our fanbase is going to care.
(But several rivals do think it'll be mentioned in recruiting, no way to know if that actually happens though)

Reminds me a lot of UT football. Outsiders talk a lot of shiz of us being yesteryear, but we still have a lot of the right things in place...just need the right coach.

Agree mostly with what you’re saying, but allowing a $5 mil buyout to hang up a coaching hire doesn’t scream “pour money into b-ball” to me.

50/50 for me. He maxed out in '15, '16. His style is that of a successful G5, doesn't cut it here.

Gave us some good-- you listed it (I'd add Barnett, and maybe Nike, but an ambassador like Dobbs is the best it can get)

Obviously will be remembered and rightfully so for being the ultimate failure, laughing stock, and later, a cheap traitor (as if we wanted him on our sideline as he left Neyland smoking a TSIO cigar like he deserved it)

Glad we have who we have now. I guess thanks to Butch for making me more grateful.

My take on the recruiting angle is that a coach using it will have to show where he never entertained a better offer to properly utilize it. How many of those guys exist?

I went and watched the video and let me tell you, boy did I learn something! Oh wait, no I didn’t. Why? Because I already knew what he said. Him saying it in a grandpa voice doesn’t change anything.

At the end of the day, he said that if they would’ve paid his buyout he’d be at UCLA. That is an incredibly dumb thing to say and it’s a bad look for him and our school. It will be and probably already is being used against him in recruiting.

This is not some outrageous take so I don’t understand why so many people feel the need to protect Barnes in here today. He should have handled this much better. Was not smart on his behalf.

I lean mostly towards that. The only way I see being used (and only sometimes) is if the coach is at a topnotch school and can claim it is his dream job. The place you leave other schools for "unlike ole TN, just a stepping stone job"

Tbh fans of other teams will twist and troll anything and everything. If this happened to, say, UF or UGA I'd definitely internally think "no shiz, ucla is a historic program" but online I would totally be like "coach said he hates Gainesville and everyone in it". Never let a good opportunity to bash your opponent pass :cool:

idk I think you may be overestimating how much recruits inquire. I take it they inquire/push very little. They eat it all up in other words.

Just look at Bama and football. Every recruit says "they put kids in the nfl". Nothing about whether or not they are BETTER at taking x level recruit and getting him there than others. Hell, give me a roster that is a third 5-stars and I'll show you nfl draftees too.

You weren’t going to be dissuaded from your angry fan stock response. It’s who you are...no hate. Barnes doesn’t need protection...he’s pretty set for the rest of his career. And other posters don’t have to “feel a need” to respond to your OPINION to do so. You always made a point to criticize his recruiting so it can only get better and better.

Just be glad that the guy can't tell a lie. We don't ever have to worry about the NCAA/FBI and we have a decent coach who will take us to tournaments. Also, looks like most of our our coaches in VOLS sports are really good ones, now.

UCLA put on a good show for their fans.

Throw a ton of money at Cal knowing he wouldn’t take it.

Throw money at experienced coaches with big buyouts hoping/maybe even knowing they couldn’t get out of the buyout.

Hire a decent non sexy hire

I haven’t criticized his recruiting in about 2 years. He’s been killing it lately so not sure why you’re bringing that up

And they stay away in droves because of rumors Saban may go to the NFL...or Texas? Learn something new. If you have a coach someone wants you have a coach who will sign recruits.
