I didn't see the presser, so I don't have his precise comments or context. Whatever he said must have been off-script, since Fulmer wouldn't have wanted to underscore that Barnes was halfway out the door. I'm guessing Fulmer hoped to combat the talk of internal tension and show how friendly he and Barnes are and how everybody's rowing in the same direction at UT.

When it comes to UT and pressers, I'm generally of the opinion that releasing written statements is safest.
lol, agreed.

but to your point, Barnes was extremely complimentary of Fulmer in this presser, and he even discussed some of the rumors about tension between the two, and he was very emphatic in saying that couldn't be further from the truth. he spoke at length about how important Fulmer has been to him since he got back here with the athletic department, and that their relationship goes back before he became AD. spoke candidly about some of the conversations they had together, specifically about how they can both relate to each other from the standpoint of being fired from a place they loved, but that the difference for Fulmer was that he spent a lifetime here, and that there was no one that loved this university more, and that there is no truth to any rumors about there being issues with support, either way.

that was actually a pretty interesting part of the press conference. and i'll just say, if THAT was b.s, then barnes is the best B.S. artist out there.

So wait! Basilio was wrong about Fulmer again?!? I’m shocked! Shocked I say!

Oh definitely not as bad as some of the tweets make it sound, however:
1. 99% will only ever see the tweets; and
2. Even in full context, it was still a dumb thing to say and completely an unforced error. A novice public speaker could have more gracefully dodged that question.
agreed. there was a minute there, after he said it, like he realized what he said...and made it a point to talk about how much loved UT. i don't think it was disengenious....but more a case of "i need to dress that turd up a bit here"....lol.

as the thing went on though, i still never got the impression that he doesn't want to be here. it was always more about UCLA and how he perceives that job. yet, even with that, that alone wasn't enough to get him to leave UT. the money was important to him, and even as revered as he thinks that job is, there's a financial line he wouldn't cross to take it.

and as you continue find out by listening to what he said, it's not like he as returning to a bad situation, or a situation he's actively looking to leave.

bottom line, UCLA could have had him, and they screwed up. we got him what he wanted in the end, and he stayed.

we won one of these coaching deals for once.

I think some of y’all can’t see past your orange glasses. That’s usually true of myself admittedly, but not in this case. I went over to Rupp’s rafters to see what they were saying. I figured they’d be mocking us for Barnes saying the things he did today like I would be if it were Cal who said it to them. But, surprisingly, they are actually talking logically about it and, wouldn’t you know it, from an outside perspective they agree with me that it is a terrible look for him and the school and a really dumb thing to say. Here are some samples:

There’s honest and then there’s just dumb. This is the latter.

There’s nothing to gain by admitting this now.
Just shows Tennessee and their fan base that he’s really not that committed to the program. I don’t get it.

definitely can’t help them with recruiting.

Yeah, rival coaches can say “he didn’t even wanted stay at Tennessee” kind of stuff

It’s incredibly stupid it basically shows he has no loyalty to his employer and makes it easier for them not to be loyal to him when the results are ruff for a season

Yep, that was the agenda then. He was probably totally sincere... while glossing over a few things and sweeping a little dirt under the rug. That's the way it generally goes, and no harm, no foul there. It's unfortunate he got into anything about leaving. He'd have been better off to say he and Candy are thrilled everything worked out and he's excited about continuing to move the program forward... then seguing into that.

have you watched the thing yet?

or are you telling me you're getting the information to support your opinion from a KY message board?

Interesting you pick -that- fanbase and THEY are so willing to discuss...had their fully committed coach taken the pay cut offered him UCLA never talks to Barnes.

And I'm still glad he stayed, and all of that.

But I would prefer if he never again publicly spoke of his flirtation with UCLA.

I think Rick crapped the bed on his interview. I’m having a hard time finding a positive spin on this one too.

Their rivals site is free, that’s why I picked them. But they’re exactly right about what they’re saying. Notice cal didn’t tell them he wanted to go to UCLA like Barnes told us and our players today
