Ya boy gonna be in ‘Merica in less than a month, eatin’ Up all your tasties, hollerin’ at all your church folk
There's some ladies at my church who will make you rue the day you hollered at them. Very sweet ladies but don't you go messing with their Jesus.

... And the current employer isn't being a dick demanding unearned loyalty. We are all adults, until one of us isn't.

That "current employer" actually rehired me a total of 3 times to return back.

Most places care about whether you can or can't do what they are paying you for, if you can then they want you to do it as cheap as possible for them. That means you may leave employer A. to go do the same thing with employer B. who is going to pay you more to do it.

I will say this, I get that a lot of people are faith centralized. But man I wish sports & entertainment folks would keep it to themselves. I don't know that God really wills one sports team to beat another sports team.

Funny you mention that, it's exactly how my line of work goes.

I put in a notice once in October...the new company -wanted me- before Thanksgiving, current employer didn't want me gone. Went back & forth a few times with the current boss couldn't give me what I wanted to stay. New job ended up waiting until after the holidays to finally give me a start date...day after MLK Jr. Day.

Was on a "could be this week" notice for 3 months. No one takes it personal if you're civil and honest with everyone involved.
I’ve done the exact same thing too. I’m not saying it’s uncommon.

But I think it does make people second guess your commitment. Magnify that times 10 in a public facing job.

I'm glad Rick Barnes is staying, and I don't care if it was only because UCLA wouldn't pay the buyout. It's a business, and UCLA is still a dream job in the eyes of many Boomer coaches that grew up in awe of Wooden. I'm just glad we aren't troting out Steve Forbes or Casey Alexander and staring a 3 year rebuild in the face. We get to keep our 5 star playing coming in, and it has to help us with our current players who have one foot in the NBA draft.

The only thing that bothers me is that he keeps referring to God wanting him to be here, when we know for a fact it's about money. Is he saying that he knew God wanted him to stay at Tennessee because UCLA lowballed him on the buyout? I guess they do say God works in mysterious ways...
I would have been excited over a Steve Forbes hire. But it would have been a reboot with the requisite time needed to build a recruiting base. But we wouldn’t have been worried about UCLA...until Barnes retired. 😉 Then we begin the honored tradition of being their Missouri State.

Well they should, I'm only at my job because they pay me...if that's not the most shallow form of commitment then I don't what is.

I think Ubben's tweet is a bit more clear. Barnes was directly asked about the UCLA buyout, and whether he would have left had they paid it. His response seems honest and fair, in his mind he was prepared to leave if they paid the buyout, felt like since they decided not to that was his sign to stay at UT.

Ok, assuming Barnes didn't put a single foot wrong with his statement, still doesn't explain why you would call a press conference for him to say it.

Fans may be naive to think that coaches aren't just mercenaries, but a lot of fans are naive in that way--especially when it comes to good 'ol salt-of-the-earth Deacon Rick Barnes from North Carolina.

If this presser wasn't going to be a feel-good, rah rah, endear yourself to the fans again, kind of event, then why would you even have it?

To be fair though, if you had decided to stay, I doubt you would have gathered everyone together just to tell them you'd be gone if they would just have given you ____.

Once again, the discussion is why did he feel the need for this. So many alternatives to how that just played out. Including simple better wording. Just no reason to. Odd

Thought the presser was to introduce Kim English...as per normal the local media derailed it I believe.

You don't actually think Rick Barnes decided to hold the press conference though do you? Pretty sure that was UT's decision.

If my employer decided to put me on the stage after I decided to stay and I was asked directly would I have left if company B had paid me more...well don't ask a question you don't want to hear the answer to.

I don’t know if this is just me or what but during my career if I ever turned in my notice I would never reconsider and there were often times when the offers to reconsider were very generous. I always made sure I was committed to leaving before turning in the notice in the first place because I didn’t want anyone ever holding something over my head sort of like some people are reacting to the Barnes situation. I also didn't want to lose my opportunity to "cry wolf" at some point in the future. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else. I just never wanted to be seen as someone who played games. I agree with those expressing upset with Barnes in this aspect, he has monetized a significant portion of the goodwill he had previously built up. Personally, I don’t like negotiations for myself but on behalf of my projects I’m a damn good negotiator. Before I went into the Navy I was in college studying in the field of coaching major sports. That was in the mid-70’s. I would have never made it in today’s coaching world. I’m not hardcore enough and don’t have that kind of toughness.

Somewhere on this board, surely there exists a Gucci of hot sauces (maybe even Gucci himself).

And when this person, whoever they may be, makes themselves known, get ready for condescension that burns with the fire of a thousand independent, craft, limited batch, artisanal suns.
Gator Hammock is awesome on chicken wings and firehouse subs.

I loved him. Now I’m meh on him and wish we had Bruce back. He loved it here. Barnes openly told us and the recruits today that he didn’t want to be here. That’s insulting

I agree to an extent. That being said his players love him. They won’t stop loving him and he continues to recruit at a higher level. If that slows down. I will criticize this decision then.

If we take a step back cause we lost 3 starters to the league I will complain less as long as he is retooling for a rebound the next year

I'm sorrry, but to me: "I knew God wanted me at Tennessee because UCLA didn't come back to me with enough pieces of silver." seems like a massively inappropriate interpretation of divine will.

Fair take, I've yet to "stay" but I've often "returned" to employers. Sometimes you gotta leave for them to realize your value.

I don't care about any of it to be frank. Holly loved UT and she got canned with a winning record, never missed the NCAA and never lost more than she won. She loved the university so much she still wanted her fat buyout too. Pruitt might go to the SEC championship game in a year or 2 and then get offered 5 or 6 million to replace Saban. Can't blame him if he leaves, fans will be up in arms I'm sure. But it's hard to preach or throw stones when the same university would just as quickly pay him 5 million to find a new job if he goes 4-8.

Fans are without a doubt FAR more committed to their sports teams & universities than ANYONE that's being paid to wear the orange & white (including players). It's why a place like this forum thrives regardless of how good or bad the teams are performing. I personally love that the most about sports, the fandom of it all.

Got it.
I just happen to disagree strongly. Absolutely no reason he couldn't have used better wording imo.

Just feels like several are defending our coach because he's our coach, not because they don't believe there was better alternatives.

My guess, someone brings a tweet here where Florida's coach said this, we're all laughing.
But we're never all going to agree on everything. 👍

The story of Gideon’s Fleece is a way many Christians attempt to discover God’s will.
The idea is to ask God to confirm His will by asking Him to show you a sign. It is as you said “an inappropriate interpretation of divine will.” You and I agree.
The story of Gideon is a single circumstance and not intended to be universal. The Lord has given His Holy Spirit and His Holy Word to guide and direct believers today.

Well that's also your paraphrasing of the comment.

Rick Barnes is still a man of free will making his own decisions, his interpretation of what UCLA or Tennessee doing during the negotiations being considered a sign from God does not mean that God specifically -did- anything. Men of faith feel they are being driven into their decisions by God, but it is still their own will that drives them. It's why some pastors are fine taking millions and living in mansions, and some are willing to put cyanide in Kool-Aid to take out nearly a thousand followers.

"God's will" is not man's to assign.

Ah. Well, Rick could have blown off the question. "You know, that whole thing is done with. I'm where I want to be, at a place that's committed to winning basketball, with the best fans in college sports, and I'm looking forward to finalizing my staff. And that starts with Kim English."

Easy.
