Let's all not act like UCLA wasn't about to make Barnes the 3rd highest paid coach if we didn't.

I personally love the message UT & Fulmer have sent. With hiring away Chaney, paying enough to pull a NFL guy and now keeping Barnes here... "we'll pay if you can produce" granted the football staff still has to prove they can produce, and I think UT will expect to see Barnes having us competing for SEC titles every season and NCAA runs from here on out, and money won't be an excuse anymore.

Nope.

It’s exactly what it says. He likes Tennessee. Says it’s a special place - but says the only thing that prevented him from getting the deal done with UCLA was the signing bonus they agreed to give him would not pay a high enough portion of his buyout.

That's not a quote from Barnes. Can't be that difficult.

There is just something about the way Cucker types, writes, tweets, talks that makes me want to punch him in the face.

Wes Rucker is a tryhard social media bloviator. He's pandering to the crowd and trying to build a social media following using content curation guidelines that look like something out of BuzzFeed's 2011 marketing playbook. He's inauthentic and everything about his communication style comes off as totally cringeworthy. His communication style would work if his content was putting together listicles for the soy latte crowd. It not at all effective for connecting with college football fans, and especially those who follow recruiting.

Do you guys think Calamari and ShipShipsky underperformed this year? I mean Calamari gets a lifetime contract and ShipShipsky had maybe the most celebrated player of the year. I, for one, am disappointed in both of those guys. When UCLA went after Calamari his school countered with a lifetime contract. When ShipShipsky's team gets booted from the tournament their team's fans set up gofundmes for their next round of recruits.

Sometimes I think we have more critics in our fan base than we have supporters. Got Dammit guys, we're never going to win with that altitude.

Deerpark posted this in The Lady Vols forum regarding the coaching search.......View attachment 201231

This was the issue several of us had discussed even before Holly was fired. High level coaches, who are paid quite well, don't want to leave comfortable locations, even if their school hasn't been historically great. The money is all the same these days, and most of these coaches are legends at their schools.

I thought Mitchell might be interested because of his tie to UT. Kentucky kind of just lucked into Calipari. If Calipari had already been at a Villanova, UCLA, UNC, or somehere like that, he may not have gone to UK.

My third favorite tie (behind the one I was married in and the one from my former boss and mentor's closet after he passed).

That tie goes very well with a white dress shirt and navy sportcoat/blazer. I'll wear mine when I'm traveling on business to meet new clients, and all over the country I frequently get asked if those are Tennessee colors. It's the perfect icebreaker for business, and it's even helped me get preferential seating on airlines (still waiting on that comped first class upgrade though).

I dislike Rucker and find him cringeworthy as well, but I think you're off on this. He has by far the most followers of anyone reporting on Tennessee, and in fact I would imagine he's probably one of the most heavily followed single-team beat reporters in the nation (70.5k followers).

After he stood with us in a major way during the Butch and Schiano mess, I am fine with him. In fact, that is how I categorize my sports reporters-- with Vol Nation or against us. Those who stood with Currie and lectured us like Hyams have lost my respect. ( Ainge is a VOL, so I cut him more slack)

Yo...one thing about the Barnes situation that chaps me.

How many local spots offering him free food/tickets, and if he used any of it on his players we'd have the NCAA up our backside.

This - all day and all night

Why would a highly accomplished coach leave a good situation where he/she has been successful when the money is in the same ballpark? Why did Barnes stay at UT? It was still a good situation and the money issue was resolved. Had it not been resolved he would have left. Next to no coaches go to another program for similar money if they are successful where they are,

Kellie can get it done in terms of returning them to top ten. But the program is a mess right now. She needs to bring in her girls. This is a Barnes type rebuild, will take 3-4 years. The good thing is the LV program is still blue blood so there is a desire to come by elite players. None of the high ranked recent recruits who became LV's came to UT solely because of Holly. If she had been the coach at NC State her record would probably have been worse than Kellie's. Those players wanted to be LV's. The brand still has a good draw.

i bet before it's all said and done, they find a way to turn all that in to something good for some charities in Knoxville/East TN.

Agreed, but I actually think we'll see Kellie's impact faster than Barnes. Mostly because the women's game is a bit different and for all the fault Holly had recruiting wasn't one of them. So the talent is already here, how hard they are to mold and get motivated to play up their potential will be the biggest challenge in year 1 for KJH, but by year 2 and 3 I think she'll have her culture installed and momentum.

Also agree about Barnes 3.25 vs 5 million is a different debate than 4.5-4.7 vs 5 million (not sure just yet what the exact figures are on his new deal)
