And that same coach has a history of the same that can be pointed at. As for Fulmer? There was this NFL team...the Carolina Panthers?Again, it's all about the perception. Do you think this hurts or helps recruiting? If I'm an opposing coach, I'm saying "Barnes is there until the next big offer comes." You can argue all you want and defend coach Barnes and what happened yesterday as normal business but it is simply not. Distrust abounds. As LA said yesterday, coach Fulmer will remember this. This was not the way to handle it if you 100% invested in a program.
i probably just generalized, and maybe anger is the wrong word. either way, when you say "his actions", what did he do, exactly?I don't disagree with any of that except for number three. I never said fans should feel "angry" towards him. I said they would look at him differently. If they had the perception of him being totally loyal to the university, whether that was a perception created by the fans themselves or not, they have the right change that perception based on his actions. This took 99% of the fan base by surprise. That tells me that many had a different perception of Barnes than what was reality. I know I'll look at Coach Barnes differently from here on out, not anger but just realize that he is what he is, a hired hand. A very good hired hand that I would hate to lose.
agree about the perception.Again, it's all about the perception. Do you think this hurts or helps recruiting? If I'm an opposing coach, I'm saying "Barnes is there until the next big offer comes." He's neither. He's an employee.i probably just generalized, and maybe anger is the wrong word. either way, when you say "his actions", what did he do, exactly?
he considered a $5M offer from a program he perceives is one of the blue bloods.
he accepted a counter offer to stay put, and got more money for his assistants.
how is he a villian here? or disengenious?
It also sent a message to every coach in the US. Tennessee is now a school they will all consider instead of the school that you use to get a raise. You know it had to kill PF when we were begging coaches to come here.I was thinking along similar lines. As crazy as all this has been, it could prove to send a very strong message to recruits (and families) that we are as committed as anyone to compete with the blue bloods. Barnes appears to be on the path of retirement here (5-7) more years, great facilities, passionate fan base, AD support, coupled with proven player/program growth.
What feels like bad publicity could be spun to pull top tier talent. Just a thought.![]()
