Lol, some wanted him gone because he didn't win a national championship or at least make a final four.
I agree, I dont fault anyone for trying to maximize their wealth. More power to them. However, don't claim to be all in on something when you leave the door open with a foot sticking out. Whether it was Barnes fault or not, he was perceived to be here until he retired. He preached family and perspective. His image was that he was different than most head coaches that would leave for the next big thing. When that turns out not to be true, I don't think it's fair to be critical of fans for view him a different light than they thought.

Like i said before. This was more a flex than anything. Other sports especially the ones who are winning right now want the attention that fulmer has been giving football. They deserve it. Especially basketball, softball, and soccer.

I think there is definitely something to the excessive toxicity in a portion of our fan base. People don’t want to admit it and of course will point to our peers and say they do it too but nobody does it better than we do. I’ve heard it’s hard to lose anywhere in the SEC but it’s hardest on a program to lose in Knoxville. I think that works against us in recruiting. It has occurred to me that one of the reasons Pruitt has pushed so hard for a large crowd at the spring game is he wants to show recruits one of the more positive sides of our fan base.
I don’t know how long it’s going to take to rebuild football into a legitimate contender and I’ll be surprised if we’re the number one team in the nation for a few weeks within the next four years but I think we have to grind it out and try to improve our recruiting classes at least marginally almost every year. I could see us, say maybe 10 years or so down the road, maybe we’ve made it to Atlanta once or twice, but fans are disgruntled. Ansley takes the first available opportunity to stab Pruitt in the back and within 4 or 5 years brings us our next national championship. It’s worked before. The real key is we have to give Pruitt a chance to build a solid foundation otherwise Ansley doesn’t have a prayer. jmo.
I agree with all that. Whether it was solely fan perception or a persona fostered by Barnes, I don't think it's unreasonable to think fans would view Barnes a little less like family and a little more like an employee. That's all I'm saying.Short of my family I don't think there's a job that exist I can honestly say I'm "all in" on regardless of pay or location. Barnes can't control assumptions or perception of the fanbase no more than you or I can. I was mostly disappointed in him leaving because 2019-20 and 2020-21 were shaping up to be really good years based on incoming and present talent....him leaving now would have 100% derailed that forward momentum.
We really don't know how serious he was about UCLA, because we're not in his head. I see how long it took and how many times he spoke with Phil to try and fix things here and he makes me think his heart was here the whole time, but he also realized this might be his last opportunity to really fix his gripes with the support for him and staff. Cause what other job can come knocking that has the same sort of prestige & backing to legit pull a HC away?

I'd be willing to bet you're correct that it was about flex and attention. I just wish it hadn't gotten to him having one foot out the door if it was all about getting more support for his program. Maybe Fulmer deserves some blame for not putting the fire out when it was a flicker.Like i said before. This was more a flex than anything. Soccer can't fill the stadium giving away tickets though.
Pecking order is Football & Men's Basketball, might be a slight edge to Men's Basketball right now. And it's obvious that it can be a banner sport for programs (Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. as examples). Lady Vols Basketball when rolling is probably 3rd. Softball has been strong for awhile and now Baseball is looking solid, but I'd be interested to see if either are actually profitable for the university.
I think he'll be under more pressure to win. He'll be expected to recruit well and hang a banner during the next five years. They'll probably expect him to increase fundraising and pack TBA. And get some new ties.

Some are acting like Barnes was controlling the rumors when it could've very well been UCLA trying to pressure UT. Kind of like how many of us began to question Fulmer/Pruitt/UT during all those Freeze rumors.
