The Atlanta Braves - Hello darkness my old friend

Idk, I don’t think anyone can name the last 5 champs so it doesn’t really matter ha. The tournament is both entertaining and meaningless

Virginia did get an incredible amount of luck this year, moreso than any champ I can remember.

Sure it’s not my money so overall it doesn’t matter. But if he’s gonna make top 5 money the he should produce those results. He hasn’t in a decade. So now we are overpaying for a good coach with a clear ceiling at 64 years old. You’re acting like Rick Barnes is some sort of superstar up and comer. He’s not. Hell you are complaining about getting an up and comer mid major. I just saw Chris Beard go to OT in the national title game. He was at ****ing Little Rock Arkansas 4 years ago. Pearl and Martin both were mid majors and Pearl has put up better numbers than Barnes AND Martin made a S16 in year 3.

And really? If Texas A&M gave Buzz Williams $4.7M/year you wouldn’t think that’s silly? Come on now.

If Buzz Williams was at A&M for three or four years and won a conference championship and had a #1 ranking for awhile, and then one of the bluebloods tried to hire him away, they would be INSANE not to give him a raise up to $4.7 million to keep him. I can't believe you don't understand how this works. Lots and lots of coaches every year get raises they don't "deserve" -- again, in some meaningless theoretical sense -- because it's worth it to just kick in more money than to lose the coach and reboot the program.

I get that you detest Barnes enough that you would rather him walk so we can start over. Unbelievably, you seem to have learned neither of two primary lessons of the last decade or so of Tennessee, which are that A) coaching searches can easily turn into a clusterfsck, and B) no matter how bad you think it is, it can always get worse. It's okay to employ a guy who's merely really good and not elite for awhile!

I didn’t say we should let him walk. I said it’s ludicrous he’s gonna make $4.7M for what’s he done this decade. And hey I’m not gonna beseech Rich for getting his cash. I don’t necessarily even blame Phil for ponying up the cash and I’d rather keep Barnes. Phil was screwed. And I probably would have done the same thing in his situation (especially if I’m a 70 year old first time AD who is a former football coach). I’d rather make the tournament every year than not (although man it’s gonna be interesting to watch if Bone/Williams leave and we don’t make the tourney next year how soon the fan base is gonna be unhappy).

But either way, if this is what Barnes is gonna make now, then Tennessee should get their investment back. And that investment doesn’t entail bowing out early in the NCAAT and blowing conference title games.

You think Rick is gonna have a better chance than this year to make a FF? He’s going to be 65 years old. There’s a decent chance this is the best team he has here.

Of course there is! I'm under no illusions that Barnes is about to build a dynasty or anything. But I would just rather keep trucking along for a few more years with him than to immediately reach way down in that tiny-conference grab bag to see whether we'll pull out a Chris Beard or a Donnie Tyndall. Haven't you figured out yet that coaching changes are destructive?? MOST COACHING HIRES DON'T WORK OUT.

$4.7M is a lot just to keep trucking along. I’d like to think we make that kind of investment I can get better than trucking along

Either way I’m done talking about Barnes, I’d much rather talk about Dansby and Acuña

Many years ago I made the same argument about Pearl’s salary after the Pump brothers got him a couple of sketchy raises. But since then I’ve realized that’s the wrong way to look at it because coaches’ salaries don’t really mean anything. It’s not an investment. It’s like how the landlord raises the rent every year and you put up with it because it’s not worth it to move.
