Generally, I think this was much more about staff salary than anything else. It was poorly played, to let it get this far and public, but maybe that's what he had to do to get what he wanted in the end.

Sure, extra coin in his pocket is nice, but it probably wasn't the main thing for him. Very messy, but in the end, Fulmer keeps his man, and we keep a proven coach who is building well, and unlikely to bail in the future.
I would wager if he'd given another $500k to his salary pool last year this wouldn't have happened.

The year we just experienced was with a bunch of 3 stars.
No titles, no banners, basically best team in history and underperformed. I like Barnes but I don't think he was worth 4.7 million. Now go prove me wrong Rick!

Edit: unless you consider co-SEC regular season champs last year something.

So Barnes gets a $1.5 mil raise. For arguments sake let's say he got another $500K for staff. That means they invested an additional $2mil on basketball. Has Barnes increased the profit of vol basketball by more than $2mil?

doesnt really need to, this isnt a private business to maximize profits for SHs. Stakeholders, namely fans and boosters, want to maximize wins.

Last FY I see is 16-17, bball made 5.9m. What if bball, in theory, made 5.9m again this year? Barnesball didnt increase profits, but who cares? invest to win. there are no dividends or stock buybacks to execute.

Phil Fulmer just paid a basketball coach Top 3 salary.

Let’s not allow that to just slide by us.

This detail tells me Fulmer is no one’s puppet. Are we officially done shopping from bargain bin?
He also fired his good friend Holly Warlick. What I'm seeing is that we have an AD who, first and foremost, wants the Tennessee VOLS to win.

One of the things LWS has suggested in the past is that we have not had a commitment to building winning programs. Obviously he was talking more about football and I thought he was speaking largely in financial terms. We just wouldn’t spend any money. Well, maybe the wind has shifted just a bit. I think this sends the right message and I think the right people will notice. We’re going to compete with the best.

Say Pruitt in the next 2-3 years has us consistently winning 8-10 games per year. He’d have sort of restored some stability to the program and as a minimum we’d no longer be the joke of the nation. I mean I think he’s going to have to build a strong and solid foundation before he will ever have a shot from a recruiting aspect of returning our top-to-bottom talent level back to the top of the conference. It will take a while but he has a chance to do it. Say Saban finally retires and Alabama comes calling. If Pruitt at all wants to stay and if we at all want to keep him, if the guys in charge now are still here, one thing Alabama can probably count on, they may be able to get him but no way they’re going to get him cheap.

We’ve talked about this in this forum every coaching search for a while now. We’re one of the very top schools in the country in terms of athletic department revenues but for some reason we’ve long been shy about “overpaying” for a coaching staff so the sweet deals for the best coaches were often to be had at some school with substantially less revenue and resources than what we have.

Whether Barnes wins another game here or not one good thing I see coming out of this today is that our administration has let it be known that in the proverbial coaching carousel season, we now come to the table with as many, if not more, stacks of high society as anyone else. In that regard, at least for now, I think we’re moving in the right direction. For once the whiners and cheapskates lost. We’re now at least a little bit outside of our comfort zone, finally. jmo.

I find it hard to lose respect for someone who only talked to someone who offered him a new job and a bunch of money. CRB did not create drama - the media and fans created the drama.
Anyone here who says they would not at least talk with someone else if they approached you with a new job with much more pay is not being truthful.
And if my best worker came to me and told me they had new job offer, I would do my best to keep them. That is what Fulmer did.
This is true but it goes both ways.
He shouldn't be surprised if he is treated no different than us at our jobs.
At 4.7 million, most won't be looking for blurbs containing "family" or "loyalty". Nah, they'll be looking for banners to be hung.
Results. Just like the rest of us.
