That amount of pay for a coach's salary in Knoxville increases the odds of landing a willing coach that would overcome any damage by Barnes late departure. Those odds with coaches of ability to earn that salary are just as good as odds of Barnes continuing to succeed. The risk justifies the reward. There are no absolutes or guarantees, so you can quit asking like it means something.I mispoke, not retaining.
You still haven't provided any objective reason that the big name coaches you've mentioned would leave their jobs to take the UT job let alone take it over the UCLA job.
Well, the SEC isn’t nearly as competitive as the ACC. So Bennett potentially could have said yes, especially with a fat pay increase.
Given Bruce whips Barnes every time they see each other, I’d have to go with Bruce.
Izzo? Who knows, maybe he’s tired of the cold weather.
And Beard? Well, we like people from Texas, don’t we?

I don't think anyone necessarily argued one of those coaches were coming. The point is that Rick Barnes likely was not leaving and jumping to that salary is unjustified and worth a risk of him walking if you can work with the resources being dedicated to him, not to mention the buyout bonus.I've been vocal about my disappointment with the way this season ended, but I have to laugh at the folks in here acting like we could throw money around and poach a top flight coach with ease if Barnes had ditched us. If you think "he makes more than Izzo now" means "Izzo would've agreed to come to Tennessee if we offered him that money instead," you're delusional. That's not how this works, and I'm fairly certain we would've gone through a fair amount of turmoil in the aftermath of a Barnes departure.
I'm glad our AD finally stepped up to show that Tennessee isn't a stepping stone. We'll see how Rick does moving forward, because expectations are definitely going to be higher now, but bitching and trying to play out hypotheticals in your head with the multitude of blue blood coaches we could've snagged instead is just this side of worthless.
You just keep saying things that have never been mentioned or presented to you. You seem nice, but you just aren't worth debating. You are too much a simpleton. We couldn't get a dang football coach to come to one of the winningest programs in history but Izzo is gonna leave MSU for some extra $$$? LOL.
I'd absolutely love to know what solid insider info you're basing the bolded statement on. I have a hunch.I don't think anyone necessarily argued one of those coaches were coming. They basically have already cleared Pearl from what I understand. He is about to net a payday. They are loving basketball down there now. He is going to be over $4M soon.
For the record, Barnes now makes more than Tony Bennett (Virginia), Tom Izzo (Mich St), Bruce Pearl (Auburn), and Chris Beard (Tx Tech).
We sure we’re getting a good deal?
