This is my take on all this. I think if we could quantify all the knowledge in the universe it would be like stuffing the universe with 10^119 number of hydrogen atoms. I think I figured out one time that's how many from a volume perspective would fit into what we measure as the observable universe. The sum total of our knowledge and understanding would in my view be represented by just one of those atoms. I figure odds are good there are other civilizations out there. Many are like us and very primitive. I figure about 98% of all primitive civilization end up going extinct for a variety of reasons. Some civilizations are in transition. Some are advanced in their intelligence. I call those guys level III. Level 4 on my scale are super luminas. Their civilizations have survived for millions of years. The highest order civilizations are what I call the immortals. They've existed for hundreds of millions of years. Those guys are very smart. They probably know about what we would suspect is everything that could possibly be known but in reality it probably only represents a few thousand of those Hydrogen atoms.

Now you may be wondering what any of that has to do with meaning and purpose. Nothing. Really. No meaning. No Purpose. Just killing time waiting for Fingers to post the practice report tomorrow.
penrose estimated somehwere around 10 to the 80 if youre talking baryons, been looking into this question of the large numbers hypothesis and fine tuning for a couple of years now, there is a video of christopher hitchens in the back of a cab on Youtube mentioning it, if it makes him stop to think then it made me, someone who holds an opposing view, look into it

The thing about UT getting closer to $5M is that UCLA can turn around and offer $5.5M. And that's just the base. Add in perks and escalators and the package could top $6M. Barnes is going to have to decide where he wants to be. The shine is going to be off at UT, no matter what.
Where does your allegiance lie? Are you puling for him to go to UCLA?

Win and it's simply on the back burner. despite falling on his face and failing, most of this fanbase still hates lane Kiffin.
And there was a segment of the fan base that wanted him back despite how badly he screwed us over.

However, I really don’t think there’s much of a comparison to be made between Barnes and Kiffin when you consider what each put into their time in Knoxville, what benefit they brought to the athletic department, and what they gave to the fans.

Even if he leaves, he’ll have given us one of the most beloved basketball teams in school history (despite the fact that they fell short of expectations and their potential).

Kiffin gave us one sub-.500 season, some NCAA investigations, some pretty funny sound bites directed at rivals, and one awesome Halloween game. Barnes has given us way more.

Barnes appears to still be mulling over things. It does sound like Barnes is deciding if the lore of working at a blue blood is too much to pass up at this point in his career.

I think Tennessee's counter offer is comparable to what UCLA is offering. As Rob has noted this is not just some money grab.

Could I get some cliff notes? Somehow missed 60+pages from yest eve?
What did Barnes do to already “fudge up”?
Cliffs: nobody really knows and we’re all competing with our own subjective narrative/takes on what’s currently going on.

What we do know:
Barnes met with Filmer last night.
Filmed met with Boyd this morning and then Barnes again today.

What Barnes’ motivations are probably won’t be known for a while. Speculation that this was a power play for more money for his assistants and/or himself, that he thinks his road to a natty before retirement (and a shot at the HOF) is easier at UCLA, that he feels under appreciated given what Pruitt and his staff are making, etc.

All speculation though.

Welcome to the big leagues of CBB. This is what it is like when you hire a proven top head coach who knows what he is doing. We had that with Bruce until he decided to have a weenie roast. Bruce operates on the edge, Barnes doesn't have to. For UT to be successful long term since they are not a traditional elite it takes one or the other. Both have risks. For Bruce types, its NCAA issues or worse. For Barnes, its other major programs coming after your guy so it gets expensive. You can't do wannabes in CBB to maintain a strong program. You can get an occasional good season, but not a top program. The HC has to have proven himself at a high level at a mid-major or higher.

Interested to see how this turns out.

Who was filming all that?

He’s playing with my emotions.

Barnes was like “I like okra” on Vol Calls so I was like “cool he’s one of us”. Then he was like “we are a family”. So I was like “cool he’s so nice”. Then he hugged the players when we lost and was holding back tears. Then We fired Holly Warlick and Phil couldn’t be at his COY ceremony so he was like “nobody loves me”. But really he had already talked to Arkansas so it wasn’t about the love. Then he was talking to UCLA and it wasn’t about the money... but really he was offered way more than he makes here so it kinda is about money.... so

You seem to be in the know as well... what do you think?

I think he definitely recycles the burnt orange ties.

J/K.

I'm pretty sure UT has made a best and final offer. By going back to Boyd, Fulmer went to bat for Barnes and got the package sweetened. It's a 5-year deal, and they'll bump the salary pool, increase bonuses and add escalators. UCLA can offer more. So Barnes is going to have to make a decision.

I really like Barnes and wanted him to stay. I get his issues-- and I think UT should have listened and resolved the staff salaries a while back. But I think he has backed UT into a corner and that doesn't usually work out well. The timing is terrible for UT and neither Boyd nor Fulmer will forget how this played out. IMO, if he comes back to UT with any other demand or a counter, they'll wish him well and bank the buyout.

Barnes is legit stupid if he thinks he has to go to a blue blood to win the natty

No, but I do think it's easier to recruit there. It's just about opportunities. With Buzz and Musselman in the SEC, it's not getting easier. He would probably get more opportunities at UCLA to go further.
