Doesn't seem to be all about money. UT is sweetening the $$$, but probably won't/can't match the UCLA offer. And UCLA is probably prepared to counter, so it'll come down to what Barnes really wants. Even if they work it out, Barnes and Fulmer likely will have an even more strained relationship going forward. More tension is the next-to-last thing UT athletics needs (the last being another coaching search).

I'm just curious why UCLA wouldn't just come up with the extra $3 million for Jamie Dixon's buyout if they truly had 8 or 9 million to throw at Calipari and if they can offer Barnes $6 million or more. That seems like a drop in the bucket compared to what they would be paying for a long-term contract unless Dixon was also wanting a really high salary. Or pay $5 million toward Dixon's buyout, which they apparently are willing to do for Barnes, and deduct the $3 million from Dixon's new, exceedingly high UCLA salary, over the span of his contract.

There was a meeting with Fulmer and Barnes... we have a good offer for Barnes... but I’m not sure where he is at... there are factors outside of money but things concerning Texas and how he went about getting Durant is a concern... just a small factor but factor from AD side... I think he was thinking there would be more support but this is a football school so football will always get a lot more funds... I don’t want to get into all of it but there are a lot of factors from both sides on this... when they left it was still not completely clear but the offer was there and a decision should come in the morning... Coach Barnes said he will talk it over and pray about it and then come up with a final decision... the information turned as the night progressed... so we will see in the morning what prevails... less confident he stays but if he stays I don’t see him going anywhere anytime soon if he does turn this down.

We can be both!

this. money for dixon was insurmountable for dixon, but no problem for barnes? i get there's difference in the buy out, but that gap isn't very big, if getting Barnes buyout money was that easy.

plus the clow piece earlier mentioned they were going to push for Toney Bennet as well, that won't be cheap.

somewhere in all this is a smokescreen....not exactly sure yet where, but all of this can't be true.

Honestly if we weren't already in a LV coaching search AND having just came off restaffing football with ALSO likely needing to restaff the CBB coaches even if Barnes stays...I'd almost say don't bother, cause we're not going to win a bidding war and any coach looking to move after this season and the momentum he's carrying into next season (while already being a top 15 paid coach) is likely not wanting to truly be here.

but we don't want 2 coaching searches AT ALL if we can help it...so I think Phil should give him the best we can and hope it's enough, worry about next year...next year

In other news Ill have some more intel on the Barnes situation later today and relay what I can.
This would be interesting in the fact the door could now be open for you know who to come back. And make no mistake about it....he would love to come back.

In other news...this weekend is going to be a BIG one for football recruiting. There will be many on radar and a few off radar folks coming in for the Spring game. The foundation of the class will be laid this weekend.
I loved you know who, but, given a choice, don’t want to lose Coach Barnes.

Calling it now, UCLA is smoke-screening as they hire Luke Walton after he's fired by the Lakers.

(maybe?)

I actually think he'd be a solid college coach, wouldn't have to deal with a player AD situation like he got from LeBron coming to town.

So somewhat apropos of nothing, did Pearl’s flirtation with Memphis lead to UT hanging him out to dry a couple of years later?

I'd forgotten about it, but there are similarities in the two situations. Bruce was frosted about the salary differences between BB and FB and felt his assistants were being undervalued. Kiffin had gotten UT to pony up big salary increases for his assistants, and Bruce was mad about the disparity. He called out Hammy for paying several of Kiffin's assistants more than the entire BB staff. Similarly, Barnes was frosted that UT paid huge sums for Chaney and Ansley, while barely raising the salary pool for his entire staff. Barnes didn't forget that, and I'm sure Fulmer won't forget this, either.
