The idea of him being coach in waiting made more sense as a courtesy to Barnes, who would retire in 5 or 6 years as a Tennessee Volunteer, and provide a smooth transition. If Barnes is chasing a paycheck now, I think it's fair to wonder if Lanier is ready to handle a high major job like Tennessee, today. In 5 more years, maybe, but he failed in his only stint as a head coach at a low major.Sure they were some but there has been very little negative regarding him being the next cosch over the last two years. Head coach in waiting has been a topic discussed here a number of times with very little resistance.
Georgia State is precisely the type of job Lanier should have. If he does well there, a higher mid major is the next stepping stone, not a P5 job.The idea of him being coach in waiting made more sense as a courtesy to Barnes, who would retire in 5 or 6 years as a Tennessee Volunteer, and provide a smooth transition. We can, and frankly, should do better, and that isn't a knock towards Lanier. I just don't believe he's ready, and Tennessee shouldn't feel indebted to him and Barnes if Barnes runs off to SoCal for the money.
Mike Wilson seems to be in line with what Tony is sayingTB is all over the place. I'm not thinking that he has any idea what's going on.
In the past 20 years, we have had 4 coaches (Barnes, Pearl, Green, Martin) make the NCAAT, and 2 coaches (Peterson and Tyndall) who didn't.8 of those came from two coaches that leaves three for how many coaches? Tennessee has not been very successful hiring coaches that can succeed here. Barnes is the only good thing Hart did while on the job.
Basilio is saying the problem is relationship between Fulmer and Barnes. Not enough love for basketball. His opinion is that if Fulmer makes amends about more promotion and envolvement in basketball he want be leaving.
If true, Fulmer has to fix it. He will be a complete laughingstock to lose a COY who just finished the best two-year tun in program history and packs the arena...and then replace said coach with Coach Googleston from a mid-major who is a “shot in the dark.”
The woeful UT AD working its magic once again. Can we ever get any competence in that position?
I hate how coaches allow this BS to drag along and spread like wildfire. If he doesn’t want the job he needs to squash the rumors. If he does want it then come out and take it. I’m a Tennessee fan, I’m used to rejection.

What point are you failing to make?
The point I’m making is the majority of coaches at Tennessee win at about a 50 percent rate, only two coaches have been effective, consistently.
Martin isn’t a very good coach and as soon as Green ran out of Oneils players he was canned. So we’ve had two coaches in twenty years that were above average.
Im sure UCLA would want it done as quickly as possible. However a rushed decision could cause Barnes to stay with the familiar environment here in Tennessee. Remember he likes the area as his wifes history in the area. So at this point in his life if money is even comparable he may stay for her sake. Will the announcement be made today if he is indeed leaving?
