Rick Barnes has emerged as a serious candidate the for UCLA job, reportedly has interviewed

Not if we finish, say, 5th or 6th in the SEC and are on the NCAA bubble all year.

It will be held against him.

" my admiration for John wooden and the history of ucla led me to have conversations with them about their vacancy but after thoughts and prayers Tennessee is home. Tennessee just means too much to me to leave even for more $ and i plan to retire here"

I’m not sure if Barnes understands the miscalculation he’s made here.

We’re going to take a step back next year with Bone, Admiral, Kyle and likely Grant leaving.

People are going to hold this whole UCLA thing against him if we start to lose. You’ll hear a lot of “we should have just let him walk.”

Or maybe he knows the next couple of years are going to be lean. Maybe he's looking to make the move to a more desirable job now while his stock is up? Lot easier to win big and win quicker at UCLA than trying to rebuild at UT.

I don’t disagree that’s probably part of the calculation.

It just feels like the more they allow this to drag on, the more likely he is to take the job. Because otherwise you’d want to get in front of the rumors and not piss off the fanbase.

I will never understand why people are making the job at UCLA like some massive overhaul rebuilding..... Just goes to show how little these reporters and media types know about the current roster at UCLA.
It IS a rebuild to bring a new philosophy into a roster/team that had a different one before...

I hate how coaches allow this BS to drag along and spread like wildfire. If he doesn’t want the job he needs to squash the rumors. If he does want it then come out and take it. I’m a Tennessee fan, I’m used to rejection.

But a minimal rebuild compared to what Barnes had in Knoxville.

Barnes would be walking into a roster with atleast five 4-5 star kids on the roster and could recruit additional big names.

Hell with the talent currently on their roster, they are good enough to make a run to get a tourney spot with Barnes coaching.

Not a tough task for a coach like Barnes....

Interesting stuff here...

Not that it matters, but if this comes to pass and we hire some Buzz Peterson equivalent, it will confirm my concern that PF is a poor fit for AD due to his lack of prioritization for MBB. I know it won’t happen, but would hope to see his termination follow quickly.

Not me. We are and always have been a football school. And that’s alright with me

I kind of agree here. Any way you look at it, Barnes having to pay assistants out of his own pocket is not a good look.

How many decide to stay and play for a preaching southerner? He could have complete turnover.

Were supposed to know in 24 hours as reported that UCLA has already made the big offer. I don't know what he wants to stay but has talked to Fulmer already according to reporting and decision will not be based on money. This will be a quick deal evidently he is either gone or is staying and we'll know probably by Tuesday.

I assume Deacon Barnes is mulling things over with Mama Barnes today while waiting on a call from Phil......

Doubtful? You know these players personally?

What kid is going to leave LA and UCLA to go sit out a year because they don't like a top coach their school just hired???

There is more reason to say they would stay and play under Barnes than saying they would leave....

Wasn’t Barnes paying his assistants when we had Currie as AD? Did fulmer do Barnes last contract?

The kid who has a huge ego and is not going to listen or respect some southerner. Surely you don't think those are the same type of players that he has at TN.

The guys who Barnes recruited to Tennessee were lucky to have offers and made the most of it under his program and development.

Meanwhile, those 4-5 star kids are home twiddling their thumbs during March....

It is crystal clear what kind of caliber coach Barnes is. Given how their search has gone and drug out, ending up with Barnes would be a huge win and those kids know that.
