Rick Barnes has emerged as a serious candidate the for UCLA job, reportedly has interviewed

Its almost like people are shocked the AD who is a former National Title winning coach at Tennessee is fully invested in helping the football program get turned around first and foremost....
And the men's basketball program appeared to be running on all cylinders, so if it isn't broke why get involved?

Exactly.

Phil strikes me as the kind of AD who doesn't want to have to worry about basketball unless he has too. Barnes also could take that as not feeling love... The striking thing is he is 64 and worried about getting attention.

Lol. My contact is behind the closed door. Again he could take UCLA job. Highly doubt it though. A raise probably forthcoming.

Barnes is the 2nd highest paid coach in the conference, he does not deserve Coach Cal money. He does not have an agent, he himself has gotten involved with UCLA and more than likely has every intention on taking that job.

I agree. I see Bruins point for beating that drum, but it’s a complete bandaid fix.

Look get off your high horse

If Pearl isn't an option which I think is the case. Dixon is the next play. If he isn't obtainable then hire Lanier quickly. That keeps the roster and recruiting the same. Worth a shot imo.

If what's being reported is true, then he's going to get all the attention he wants at UCLA.

BTW it isn't just Basilio reporting these things.

Common sense more than anything

I love the "100%" crowd on here. Making claims and backing it up with a detail like "common sense" is asinine. I bet you thought there was a 100% chance Barnes retires at UT..... But hey looks like that number isn't 100%

Koch Brothers won't let Marshall leave Wichita.
I see this a lot. None of them are alums of WSU, and it seems that they prefer their money to go to causes other than athletics. I know they are from Wichita, but are they really that involved?

You think Phil is gonna pony up 3 million just to get Dixon to the negotiating table? He ain't dropping that kinda cash on a buyout for another coach....

You’re going to get a bargain hire regardless.

Look, this is not a blue blood job. It's not a dream job for the big names of the sport. UT isn't going to attract guys like Barnes very often. And this notion that we can just keep raising the offer to some insane level to the point they won't say no isn't living in reality. It takes the right time and set of circumstances. This run and with Barnes was something of a perfect storm. It just worked for both parties at the time.

If he leaves, I thank him for his efforts and the 2 great seasons we enjoyed, but UT like most other programs not named Kentucky, UCLA, Duke, UNC, etc will have to find an up and coming coach who's the right fit and that can recruit his tail off. Pretty much the basketball version of Pruitt. You can witch and moan about UT being cheap, but you can't force someone to come to a place that they don't want to be. I know this might be hard to believe, but not everyone considers east Tennessee to be a dream job or dream spot to live. And yes, I was born and raised there, but I don't live there and have no desire to return either. We'll get a good coach if Barnes leaves. He'll face a huge rebuild, but it's not like we've not been there before. Pretty much every sport at UTK is in or recently been in the crapper.

Yes they are involved. They do tons for Gregg Marshall and the basketball program. They are constantly partnering with the basketball team on initiatives and whatnot.

They basically bankroll the basketball squad as they were apparently a big part in landing Gregg Marshall in the first place.

How is thinking we can do better than Georgia States brand new coach being on a high horse? Their last coach did extremely well and got the Tulane job, for reference.

UCLA couldn't land Cal.....

So might as well go get the guy who currently owns and lives rent free in Cal's head.

Hey, I’m with you. Never been Barnes’ biggest fan. I think he did a really good job, but underachieved this year and likely peaked in the process.

There’s no guarantee we hire someone better. But this is a good job where any good coach can win.

Barnes' buyout is 5 million
Dixon's in 8 million. Why would Phil spend 3 million to hire a coach like Dixon when he could spend 1 million (Bruce's buyout at 6 million) to call Bruce up and see if he wants the job. Dixon would be a last case scenario as his buyout is astronomical.

Georgia State has nothing to do with it. Lanier has always been considered a great candidate to replace Barnes and I don't know why now would be any different. If anything the success makes it make more sense

Sure if Bruce is 100% clear of the FBI. I doubt he is

I don't buy this whole "not feeling love" from Fulmer narrative. It makes Barnes seem like emotionally he is a 12 year old girl. I have never gotten that impression. If he leaves it will be for money and because he thinks UCLA's 11 national championships and location put him in a better position to win it all before he retires.

Well considering Person's charges and sentencing basically exonerated anything with Bruce, I'd say he's in the clear.

I think people hate the idea of Bruce as an option and use the FBI "probe" as a reason
