Im going give Coach Barnes the benefit of the doubt tonight at midnight local. He can get some sleep and put this to bed after breakfast tomorrow.

I’m betting losing Lanier was a big deal. We all know CRB was helping to pay assistants, that would get annoying to me. Add to that the COY ceremony?
Fully expecting to wake up to a disappointment

That ceremony sounds like he was looking for reasons now. Obviously was talking to other schools like Arkansas. The timeline doesn’t add up now.

Slighted maybe. Leave your job and established relationships with your kids. Nah. Fulmer had to hire a coach and was present where the majority of coaches in WBB were located.

That’s true. I always forget the family relocation part. My wife would have to get commitments on many promises to get me to move every 4 years.

From the UCLA message board:

Rick Barnes the latest name being floated around

I like him as a coach but don't know how I feel about his age at 65yo
How about the other Rick B.?
Rick Byrd, about the same age as Barnes, just retired from Belmont. Over 800 wins, 12 conference championships, eight NCAA tournaments (won a play-in game this year and then almost upset Maryland), beat us in Pauley this season, etc. etc. He could still use his "Bruin" gear. Outstanding coach.
Rick Barnes
This rumor is coming from Evan Daniels at 247 Sports. Timing could be right. He only has the 29th rated recruiting class coming in ( that won’t cut it in the SEC) and is losing serious serious talent to graduation and the NBA draft. His Assistant Bob Lanier just left to take the Georgia St. job. He landed s 5-star combo guard who might follow him to Westwood and he has the pizazz to possibly land Cassius Stanley.
the Man can coach
Hopefully brings along some quality assistants
currently makes $3.25m/ & 5mm buyout
Per bolch
He was good at Providence, impressive at Clemson. Disappointed at Texas, but has done quite well at Tennessee. He knows how to coach. He may not be one of the greats, but he would make us more than creditable. As far as age, there are plenty of coaches in their 70's now.
He just stayed at Texas too long
I believe Barnes run at Texas is longer than any runs in the Pac-10/12 since the conference expanded in the late 1970s - well, except for Lute and Monty - and they are supercoaches.
Hard to believe, but true. He's coached in the Big East, ACC, Big 12, and SEC, and certainly done creditably in all of them.
Disappointed at Texas?
Tell me more.
A FF, two EEs, two S16s, 3 B12 championships, 400 wins.
Tennessee has all that SEC money.
We aren't going to be able to lure him away.

Appreciate all of what Barnes has accomplished here.

Wouldn't be mad if he left though. We had a great team this year. Definitely feel we underachieved.

Outside of James, recruiting has been meh.

A young and upcoming coach with a lot of energy and fast pace style would be a great shot in the arm for this program. Think a younger Bruce without the baggage.

If he decides to stay, cool. If he decides to go, well bye.

His current $3.25 million salary will be worth
about 1/2 that in tax crazy California. While in Tennessee it’s still worth over 2 million or more. Not sure that factors for Barnes, but you would need a lot of money for assistants to make up that difference even at $200k plus.
