If Barnes leaves, and frankly I can't imagine he actually will, I don't think it's going to be because they can give him a 3 million dollar raise. If Barnes, at 64, hasn't made enough after this long in high profile jobs to keep his family secure, I'd be extremely surprised. If he leaves it will be because UCLA is one of the big 5 programs in NCAA history. If you win big there you become a basketball immortal. Not sure Rick is a HoF coach at this point, but coaching at UCLA and doing well there would mean a lot for that legacy.
Rick Barnes is definitely a hall of fame coach.

Yea, Jay Wright is only working in his hometown where he’s won 2 national titles. Why wouldn’t it make sense for him to leave for UT, who has never been to a FF? Lol.

Delusional is correct.

Do people even pause to think for a nanosecond before posting crapola like that?

Yeah... Heaven forbid we'd have to hire a BETTER coach. Maybe since the program isnt a dumpster fire, we'll have the opportunity to swing BIG! Go get Jay Wright from NOVA. Surely we could pay more.
He makes more than Barnes right now as the 8th highest paid coach in the country.

So if he knows he only has 5-6 years left in the tank and last achievement has on the list is a natty, why stay at UT over UCLA? I think that will be the biggest determination here
Because he has already established the culture he wants and it is ingrained in his current players and the recruits he is bringing in and developing relationships with. It took 3-4 years to do that. Why start over in that process at UCLA if you are looking at a 5-6 year window. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Barnes takes the 5.5 million from UCLA. Tennessee brings Pearl back. Pearl ends up with another Three year show cause
It's the Tennessee way. Haha, nah Barnes next move will be to the lake home

UCLA recruiting is literally effortless. You don’t even have to leave LA to do it. The window for a Title at UCLA is much wider than at UT.

Not saying I think he leaves but if his main driver is getting a title, UCLA offers the quickest and easier path.

Remember, he wasn’t brought to UT to win titles but to turn the program around.

At UCLA, winning titles would be first and foremost

I wonder who in the hell Fulmer would turn to if Barnes did leave. It’s getting late in the carousel. It would be a bad situation.

Interesting.

Or Lanier wanted to stay if he was given a raise?

Weird timing for this report. I’m looking forward to seeing what VQ says about this.

Sure seems like something negative must have happened behind the scenes.

It's just about the only thing I think could make him leave. I don't think $ matters

Another factor to consider is the Williams/Bone decisions.

If they leave, it really does become quite a rebuild. Get a raise, let the next coach deal with the rebuilding years.

Again, I don't think that's the case but a possibility.

That might be an overstatement. Jim Harrick won a National Title there. Is he a basketball immortal? Ben Howland made the Final Four 3 times and the National Championship game. Is Mississippi State's current coach a basketball immortal too?

No doubt it is easier to recruit there... look at the players that Howland used to pull. But Barnes is recruiting at a high level now with Josiah James and Corey Walker on the way and the quality of our visit list is really starting to pick up. Finally, I think east Tennessee is a much better fit for his personality than southern California. By all accounts, he and his wife (a UT graduate, remember?), love it here.

UCLA is most definitely a better job. You don’t have to leave the city to recruit and you have an easier league.

I’d love to see the day where UT basketball is in the same category as UCLA and other blue bloods but this ain’t it, Chief.

Disagree.

The part that would confuse me the most is them trying to hire Jamie Dixon if they have serious interest from Rick Barnes. What is the logic in that?
