I'm more optimistic about the offense than I am the defense. I'm not pessimistic about the defense; I just think we have more questions on that side. I know most people are mostly concerned about the defensive line but my biggest concern is the secondary and the ability of our linebackers to hold up in coverage. In my view, at this point, we only have 3 sure fire starters in the back end and maybe 4 if McCollough wins the star position. I mean we didn't move Gibbs away from WR where he's been shining to the secondary on a whim.

We have to figure out a way to keep our opponents off the scoreboard. I don’t think our offense is going to put up Tyler Bray 2012 numbers or Josh Dobbs 2015 & 2016 numbers but I do expect we’ll do a lot better than last year. The only way that benefits us is if our defense (Ansley) can dramatically cut down the number of points we’re giving up to the other team. jmo.

One nitpicky thing: Pruitt and staff had their mind made up that they were going to work Gibbs out on both sides of the ball regardless of how well he did on one or the other. I don't think them moving him to DB this last practice was a sign that we're weaker on the back end than expected.

Agreed about LB's in coverage. Hopefully Reid and Bituli show some improvement in that area. I know some a few of us have our minds made up about Bituli already, but who knows.

I think the big thing is we're trying to build depth. I define depth as having an over-abundance of capable starters for that position, no drop-off. I think we have depth this year at WR, OL, and RB. I'm not sure about QB or TE. On defense we should have depth at LB. We'll know more about the DL this fall but in the secondary I'm a bit concerned. I'm actually hoping Beasley shows up this fall and lights up our receiving corps. Sorry guys.

Hopefully Warren Burrell is a quick study in the secondary as well

I haven't heard much about him from the spring so far but with our reporters mostly focused on JJP I guess that's understandable. I watched WB in one game in high school and thought he did a good job. I thought he was a bit slow but then he was always matched up with 5-star receivers on the other team so probably most DBs are going to look slow by comparison. He actually did a good job though so I guess we'll see.

Only other PGs that may rate above him are

Ja Morant (Murray State - lottery pick)
Darrius Garland (Vandy - injury concerns?)
Coby White (UNC - combo moreso)
Tre Jones (Duke)
Carsen Edwards (Purdue)
Markus Howard (Marquette)

There are a few others, but none that I would put on par with or above Bone.

Deepest positions to shallowest:

Ocean-deep
WR
: Senior-laden. Still some concern about underclassmen behind them, but Ramel and (hopefully) Tillman can help. (Experienced) depth may be more of a concern in 2020.

Great Salt Lake-deep
TE
: DWA, plus Lowe, Jacob Warren, and Sean Brown. Freshmen have been known to start and do well, and fortunately we have JW who's got a year in the program, and Lowe has come in as big as advertised.
RB: Chandler can start basically anywhere in the country. If Banks maintains his explosiveness and fixes his fumbling, we can have a potent 2-back duo. Gray should see his share of reps, and Jordan has hopefully figured out how to squeeze through smaller holes along the OL. Also really like CFA as a wrinkle player at the minimum.
LB: So many pieces, such a diverse group. Not a lot of stand-out performances to this point, but I think this group has a competitive churn to it unlike any other position group on the roster. How many are starting quality, we don't know. But we could see a lot of situational subs, which may keep guys fresh.

Mississippi River-deep
OL
: We can only hope that continuity and S&C has helped with marginal Butch leftovers like Tatum, Locklear, and Niehaus. I've got good faith in Ryan Johnson and Jerome Carvin, and I'm so glad Wanya is an EE. Worried about Jahmir's size and Kennedy's health. Doubt that McBride, Lampley, and Akpo contribute until their third years into the program

TRECs Swimming Pool-deep
DL
: We'll have a lot more pieces once summer gets here-- Middleton, Williams, Simmons. We still have a lot of names here in the meantime, but there's questionable quality, at least outside of Gooden. Can Solomon stay healthy (and what about that waiver)? Can guys like Mincey, Emerson, Butler, and Allen take the next step? Can Taylor find consistency?
S: Warrior, and who? Tank seems promising early, but may be splitting time at the Money/Star position. Flowers looked to be figuring it out, before a broken collarbone sidelined him for the second half of last year. Theo Jackson seems like a player. Maybe Beasely steps in and sees meaningful reps some time this year?
CB: Alontae and Bryce changed the entire outlook of this position group last year. Buchanan got better as the season wore on. Guys like Shamburger and Labruzza have been non-factors, and are likely already recruited over with Burrell and Fields coming into the fold. Need Alontae and Bryce to stay healthy (and not get kicked out for targeting, Alontae...) for this position not to be a total weakness.
