back off on the 3rd and 5 at the end. We had corners 15 yards off receivers with QBs who couldn't throw it. Further, if we get beat deep, who cares, the game is just as over as it was when he stupidly let a shoddy QB get a 1st down against our prevent.

I would walk to him on the sideline on that play and rip his headphones from his head, fire him and give him money to get a taxi home. I would call ahead to have his office emptied so he would never have reason to set foot in our football offices again.

Then, I would fire myself.

Can't really hang this on that play. The defense give the offense the chance to win the whole second half.

Wouldn't have mattered if we'd converted a third down in the 4th quarter

You are not kidding i mean what did we have to do to win this ball game Auburn had it on the plate trying to serve it up we just wasn't men enough to take it.

The DB's knew where the first-down line was and were playing 7 yards off. I don't get it.

Oh yea, lets call out Auburn's only first down in the second half...Chavis and his defense arent the ones who need to be called here...

It mattered more than anything on that particular play. More than anything on earth on that play. Nothing mattered more to Chavis right then and he failed massively, again and in the same fashion that he always fails. The freaking prowler.

He needs to go away. Conservative defensive football quit winning about 15 years ago. The guys doing it now are aggressive and attack weaknesses.

Same song second verse with Chavis. He should be ran out of Knoxville on a rail along with his buddies CPF and the gang. Keystone cops.

I'm not saying that wasn't boneheaded, but come on. Chavis and the Tennessee Defense held Auburn to 7 points! And we couldn't win that game?! That is not on Chavis.

The defense was the recipient of the worst QB play we'll see this decade, but their big test was that 3rd and 5 and Chavis went soft. It has beaten us more than any single thing since I have been a UT football fan.

It wasn't the prowler, it was the crapstain, as always.

Same old thing from Chavis, different day.

Go all out to get the one stop you need but instead you coach everybody to backpeddle past the first down on the snap thus giving nobody a chance to make the play.

Not to mention all the years of plain Godawful tackling.

It's the same thing, over and over and over again with him.

I would rather see him fired than anybody just because he has shown to have about the same level of intelligence as incrompitent.

I watched the 96 KY game the other day, some qb named Billy Jack Haskins had his career day against the crapstain as well, only difference is we had the talent on offense to overcome his stupidity.

I am still convinced that Al Wilson just refused to play that crap half the time.

I pointed it out in the game thread, but why was they playing soft? With AU's struggles, the odds of them going deep on 3rd and 5 that backed up to win the game are so small I can't even type it out. Typical Chavis D, and something I've complained about long before I discovered the Nation. If you're going to blame Fulmer (which I agree with), then Chavis is even worse. You play tight coverage and I promise the qb tries to get the 1st down with his feet.

Clean house. The party's over. Defense did all it could, crapton is a cancer. Best thing that could happen for us is phil's resignation on monday. I think i'am going to be sick.

I agree, I would fire myself too. It was a bonehead call, but it wasn't the reason we lost. We lost b/c we couldn't make 5-7 yards on the AU 38 yard line. Our offense stunk.

Did I say it was the reason we lost? Did I even hint that it was the reason we lost.

I said it was an atrocious defensive call by a guy who has made the same bad call for the entirety of his Vol career.

are you really blaming the defense? they allowed 7 points in the first qt. and then proceeded to hold Auburn to nothing for 3 qts.

I agree Big Papa. I was yelling it at the time. Same old scheme with the game on the line, playing off the receivers. It's not the reason we lost, the defense played well, but it could have been the reason we won if we are guarding their receivers.

auburn sucks on offense. we really shouldnt brag about how we held em to so few points. We should have never let them get that open. Bad coaching. Saying the defense stepped up today isnt really saying much against a sad auburn offense.

even after the game, which they won, shocker... tubberville sounded disappointed they didnt beat us by more. Is that saying something about our defense or their craptastic offense?

I don't get the soft defense either. This was a one play flashback to his UCLA brilliance that could have made the difference.

Grant it... it would have only mattered if our punt return team could return to a field goal range starting point for an an offense that would also need to hold their ground for 3 plays until we could get the kicker on the field.

The UT defense has extraordinary talent. I was fairly certain our chances to score were much higher when they were on the field today.

This is the worst offense I can remember. I think I'd just go G-Gun for the rest of the season. Taylor might start catching Jones' passes after he gets used to the idea that a pass might actually be catchable. I'm sure it was utter shock to see it coming right at him that way given how long it's been since that happened in a game.

Yea, not stopping Auburn there cost us. We would have been able to go 4 and out if only we had gotten the ball back.
