The Atlanta Braves

Julio is going to have the longest active opening day streak in the MLB because Kershaw and Felix aren’t making theirs this year.

Did not know you were into tanks...

I used to do quite a bit of saltwater stuff.

The boy and I have had several freshwater tanks for awhile. Started dipping my toes into saltwater six months ago or so; it was supposed to be just a learning exercise but it's gradually taken over everything because it's way more interesting (although expensive) than freshwater. At least I haven't killed any corals yet.

Why’d you get out? Too much moving around?

Yeah, that was really it. I lost my ass every time we moved on all the money I spent on corals. I ended up pretty much giving everything away. I still really like it and would love to get a nano tank, but it’s so much tougher to keep a small quantity of water like that than a big tank.

Are you using RO/DI water? That was the biggest game changer for me.

I bought an RO/DI filter as soon as I ordered the saltwater tank. Seemed unanimous online that that was practically a requirement, and getting it from the fish store seemed like a pain in the ass. I mounted it on the wall behind the washing machine so now I have RO/DI on tap.

I know what you mean about the water volume. My big freshwater tank is 100 gallons and I barely have to do anything to it. My saltwater tank is a 30 gallon all-in-one tank with all the chambers in the back, which seems to work pretty well, but as I said I’m adding a sump to get more water volume. Eventually I’m planning to upgrade to a much bigger tank but since I hope never to move again I should have just sucked it up and got the big tank to begin with.

Trying to stay deliberately low level on the corals until I’ve been at it for a good long while. Cheap frags, mostly softies. Big drama in my life right now is that yesterday my brittle star attempted to murder a jawfish. As soon as I get the sump set up that MF is going right down in it.

Nice. I’m assuming you’re running big lights? That’s the other key to corals. If I had new bulbs and supplemented with calcium and magnesium, those corals took off like crazy.

My current lights are merely okay; I haven't sprung for the nice ones yet, because my whole pitch to the wife when I crossed over into saltwater was that this was just a small tank for learning about saltwater first, blah blah blah. (She is very aware that it's not that hard to spend as much on a reef tank as you would for a car.) And if I hang a couple of expensive looking Kessils over it she's gonna notice immediately. And GOD FORBID she start auditing my aquarium expenditures. So far we've had an uneasy don't-ask-don't-tell relationship about it which I gotta be very careful not to F up. As a CPA she's kinda terrified about how much she thinks I might be spending; as a wife she really doesn't want to know.

Obviously the big lights are coming sometime though. Might have to give them to the boy for Christmas or something.

Dosing minerals is something I'm still trying to work out. My Mg test says it's off the charts even though I'm not supplementing at all, so I'm not sure I believe it.

@Wickman what is the scoring system

Never mind I found it. Please tell me we are gonna change it. No points for home runs?

Last thing about the aquariums and we can take the convo somewhere else...

Look into the hood style setups. The ones that have two metal halides in the center and are surrounded by T5s or power compact bulbs. They’re a hell of a lot more affordable and I was able to keep damn near anything under them...including an anemone. Really good budget option.

I can change it I believe. It’s a point for every total base so that makes it 4 points plus any RBI for a HR. I can change though, no biggie

Yup I did see that. I don't know maybe an extra point for a home run or something. But total bases is good too.

I do like you are gonna need to take guys that will pitch some innings (3 points for every inning pitched)

Yeah it’s 2 per IP. Standard ESPN scoring for points league. So guys that work innings tend to get more points, for sure.

It’s not letting me adjust this close to the draft for HR so it’ll have to stay at TB for those points. But still HR tends to drive points in the ESPN leagues.

That's exactly the kind of advice I need. You mean something like this?

MH 36" Metal Halide T5 Aquarium Light Reef Marine Coral 406W LED Leg 250W Bulb 19962630361 | eBay

What brand did you use? I can't find anything in the online reef stores that's not, uh, $900 plus for something that would cover my tank. Would love to find a budget-friendly version.

(Although I get that in reefing $900 sometimes IS the budget version.)

I used these a couple times...

MH 48" Metal Halide T5 Aquarium Light 716W Coral Reef Marine LED 2x 250W Bulbs 19962629761 | eBay

Odyssea brand. Total knock-off deal but they’re not bad. I did have to replace the ballasts once after a few years, but for the initial price it was totally worth it. The critical issue is the bulbs, which you’ll replace maybe a couple times a year.

Nice, that looks like the 48 inch version of the one I found on eBay. Great price. (Relatively speaking.) How loud was the cooling fan on it?
