Barnes has stated he wished he could have redshirted Alexander but couldn't because of the need. Think this could be the case with Pons though the player also needs to express the desire to redshirt (two way street). Perhaps Pons observed how both Admiral and Grant developed their games and will follow their path.
I don't think a red shirt year would hurt Pons or the team. Alexander was absolutely needed at the time. I bet he wishes he had another year too. Maybe admiral as well. I know I whish they did.

Hope so. He has game. He doesn't trust himself yet on O. That has to be fluid with no hesitation within the system. Would love to see him RS as InVOL suggests, but if not I hope he works on his O in the offseason.

A RS year would have made a big difference for Alexander. Too bad we didn't RS Pons after his injury. Guess we couldn't afford to lose his minutes, but he hasn't been as effective as we hoped. Still a lot of upside with him and JJohnson, as well.

Will be interesting to see the brackets after today's outcomes. Latest USA Today projection has Vols as a 2 seed (same as cats). ACC has 3 #1 seeds even though 2 (Va and NC) lost on Friday. yep no bias there. LOL

Lunardi has vols as a 2 and cats as a 1. UNC drops to a 2.

Going back to the first game in Lexington, we did not shoot a ft in the first half and we were down 6. They called 5 fouls on us and 3 on UK. Of those 3 fouls Washington picked up one in the first 30 seconds of the game and did not get another foul called on them until the under 4 media timeout. They called 8 totals fouls in the first half. Second half Tennessee was called for 7 fouls in the first 5 minutes of the game. Tell me how you call 8 fouls total (both teams included) for a half and then 7 against one team in the first 5 minutes of play of the second half?

It's only 2 games so it's hard to call it a pattern, but it does seem advantageous for UK to be in the bonus quickly and for a good bit of the second half of their games against us. Really, unless paranoid fans like us look closely, it's something that usually goes unnoticed. I'll be looking for a rash of fouls early in the second half today.

We are making waves in the blue blood pond. UK draws eyes nationally. UT doesn't. It's going to be an uphill climb for us today I suspect. They will want UK playing Sunday. They'll also want to have them positioned for a #1 seed when the committee comes together Sunday. Gonna take a herculean effort from the Vols today to take this one.

I believe we don't get as many calls as UK and other teams, but I also believe we do it to ourselves a good bit.

Admiral, Bowden, Turner all seem to be OK with taking jump shots or long 3s. Bone rarely drives to score and that leaves Kyle (who honestly doesn't play strong positional basketball for rebounding nor does he go hard to the basket to score) and Grant who actually avoids contact a lot with his style of scoring to try and avoid picking up offensive fouls.

I agree. Hopefully we can pull it out.

It's all perception. The prevailing opinion is that UK is the more reliable team to carry the SEC flag. People are buying UK and selling UT. If UK wins the SEC, they'll get a 1 seed; if UT wins, we could get a 2 seed. The way UT finished the season skewed perceptions. Nothing the Vols can do about it now except play through their seeding and keep winning.

I used to think Tennessee fans complain about the refs so much because we suck in football and it was used as an excuse.

....but this basketball team is really freakin good. So now I think we just complain about the refs for no reason.
Lol...Have you watched any of our games this year?

There is no bias.

In the three games we’ve lost, we’ve also been more timid and allowed the other team to dictate the tempo and the play style.

Has the officiating been “bad” at times? Absolutely. But there’s no bias and no reason the big, bad SEC wouldn’t want this team of 3 star players with their cleanest coach winning as many games as possible.
And why have we been more timid in those games? Because every time the opposing team drives to the basket, they either get a clean look or we get called for a foul. It’s hard to play aggressive when every tick tack foul is called on you, while the other team is throwing you to the ground. Maybe watch some of these games before commenting.

Is that per half?
No. We didn’t shoot any ft’s in the first half of both games. They outshot us 15 from the line in both games. I really expected to get the whistle in Knoxville because that was our first home game since the issue with LSU official. They still outshot is by 15. Lol

If they're going to call every little thing, might as well make it worthwhile. Give them some hard fouls early to send a message. And Barnes will have to match Cal's complaining-- a tall task. I'm guessing the crowd will be more blue than orange, so it's likely UK will get a favorable whistle.

I just don’t buy it. This team is good enough to overcome anything in its way. Even bad officiating. When it doesn’t, it’s because they get out of “their game” and the other team takes advantage.

We’re fans so we only see the games when the calls go against us. We don’t see when the calls are going the other way.

Again, SEC officiating is largely very bad and you won’t hear a disagreement from me. But I think, on average, it’s equally bad for everyone.

Doing a little film study this AM for Missouri guys and this play from our game caught my attention:

+s
JG does a very nice job of a side stepping and stepping up in the pocket and makes the correct read on this throw and the ball is delivered on time.

-s
This ball is supposed to be delivered right on the sideline where only the WR can catch it in play. If you look JG doesn’t get his front footb closed quite enough (it’s basically right on the edge of the hash) and it causes the ball to stay inside and thus leading to an incompletion.

With Chaney’s track record as a QB coach hopefully he can help JGs mechanics and this is a completion this year.

Do it for the gram. It will be fun they said.
