Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Thinking of buying a used Tacoma. How many miles are they good for? What should be my line in the sand for mileage? I'm not a car person.

I'm tired of tying up the kayak to the top of my little 2 door acura. Time to truly embrace my southern heritage and get a truck. I'll take any other model suggestions. I don't need anything huge as **** and I'm not looking to drop 50k on something brand new. Just something to carry the kayak and other fishing ****. Do need it to be 4 wheel drive.

Dude, mine lasted about 470k. Tacoma is the definition of longevity, and don't let any of these Ford/Gm/Chevy boys tell you different.

I'd recommend pre 2005 if you don't want to spend way more for bells, whistles, and a larger frame.

It’s hard to break a Toyota. I got my 4Runner up to 220k before trading it, never had a single issue beside routine maintenance.

This lines up with what I've read but it's good to hear it first hand. I don't need any bells or whistles so that's solid advice. It's going to be a dirty, filthy beast of burden

I'm browsing the local listings, so, there are many options.
I've owned several and like flicka and outlaw said. They last forever if treated right. I've had a Toyota Truck (before tacomas) that had over 500k and put a new transmission in at around 375k. A second generation Tacoma that I never had an issue with, ever. The new 3rd gen is hit or miss. I like the truck, but hate the drivetrain. We have had a FJ cruiser since 07 that has over 200K on it and still runs perfect, only put a wheel bearing in it. It still drives better as far as power than my 17 Tacoma does. Try to find a gen 2 Tacoma with less than 150k well taken care of. They have the same drivetrain as the FJ cruiser 4.0 engines.

Edit: there is a forum called tacomaworld. You can find out everything there is to know about each generation and make a good informed decision based off of a lot of the threads there.

My house contractor put 570,000+ on his 4wd Nissan Frontier without a rebuild. He is up to about 250,000+ on his current one.

I've owned a Nissan Hardbody, Toyota Tundra and Ford F-150. The Nissan and Toyota hardly cost me a dollar in repairs other than routine maintenance in 30 years of ownership between the two. The Ford is about a year old and I won't own it past the warranty period. I absolutely hate that truck.

You might not need 4wd but buy one with it anyway.
Resale is key here.

You will thank me later

I do want 4 wheel drive, but I can see how I worded it poorly.

I ain't trying to get stuck in the sugar sand at the beach.

PreRunner is your best bet.

Also if you're not dead set on a truck, the late 90's Landcruiser is an absolute adventure beast with the same reliability. Tons for sale with new trannies and rebuilt engines.

Frontiers are very good vehicles, too...and when new are quite a bit cheaper than the toyotas...dad had a v6, pappaw a 4cylinder...i hauled an entire deck package for a 12x16 deck in the 4 cylinder...it didnt struggle at all, or even act like it was hauling honestly. Its a BIG 3.8l 4 cylinder IIRC. my sister got my dads when he passed, i was going to buy the 4 banger from pappaw, but he totaled it sadly. I drove that 4cyl back and forth from Charlotte to Ktown every weekend for 6 months. 250 miles each way. Absolute dream on the highway. Unless you are going to be towing a big boat or something, i would drive the 4 cyl. Nissan and Toyota before writing them off. Having driven both frontiers extensively, i would buy the 4banger myself.

Either way, keep the oil changed and you cant go wrong with either of those trucks. Super reliable, wish that i had 1. I am a ford man for bigger trucks, though i have put 200k miles on 2 different Dodge rams. Had to rebuild the trans in both around 100 to 120k miles though.

Edit..by deck package i mean all posts, joists, decking boards, handrail material and even concrete. I am sure its not rated to haul that much weight. Not sure an F150 is either honestly. Those trucks have plenty of power though, and smooth transmissions. Hope the new ford rangers are very much like the frontiers. If they are, Ford will sell millions and millions of them

Have you ever seen that BBC Top Gear where they try to kill that Toyota Lux?
