As Tennessee closes out this week and next week in front of spring practice it’s about ending what’s been an offseason of competition for the Vols. Part of Craig Fitzgerald’s workouts have been about creating are more competitive environment. In January they divided the squad up into teams (picked or drafted by players) and they have competed in everything. Everything from weight room drills to agilities, to musical chairs, to class attendance as well as arrival time for meetings. Everything has been focused on competing in all that they do. The feeling coming out of last fall was that this team not only needed to get bigger, stronger and faster but they also needed to become more competitive.

One of the reasons there has been some praise for defensive back Alontae Taylor has been because of his competitiveness this winter. Taylor struggled some down the stretch of last season kind of hitting the freshman wall. One of things he was challenged with this winter was to be more competitive. He has been that which has been encouraging to the coaches and it’s given Taylor some improved confidence which has been noticed with some of his tweets about the pending start of spring ball.

There continues to be optimism and curiosity to how physical Wayna Morris is in pads. The mid-term enrollee has done nothing the last few weeks to temper enthusiasm about his future as he has impressed. He’s obviously going to have a great opportunity to go and win one of the tackle jobs this spring. No one has inked him in as a starter or anything, but there’s excitement about what he can do. Fellow freshman Chris Akporoghene has generated buzz in the weight room with his strength numbers. He has been battling a little bit of sore/tender knee, but there still optimism about him because of where he is physically in size and strength. Also quarterback Brian Maurer has thrown the ball pretty well in volunteer workouts. But as someone on campus noted this week, everyone looks pretty good when there are no pads and no 11 on 11 work. A week from now, there will be plenty of real first impressions as practice one will be under their belt.

Holly fahr'd yet?

Go baseball Vols. Coach V is the real deal.

Will the SEC office stay out of the basketball game this weekend? The team should be on the mend from the flu.

Since everybody loves baseball and Instead of the dreadful Yankees posts :), let's talk about Nick Senzel, a VFL, potentially starting in CF for the Reds on OD if they don't send him down to AAA and then bring him up two weeks later to extend the arbitration clock a year. Talk about dumb MLBPA contract provisions - that was one. Senzel has been in the IF all of his playing career and they had him learning to play OF in the offseason to get him on the field since they let Billy Hamilton go. He's been playing CF in ST. May get moved to 2B if the club deals Scooter Gennett, or, he may excel in CF and be there for good. Nick is the real deal. #2 pick in the draft when he left.

Need a football commit.

One thing to keep in mind, whoever coaches this team going forward is going to inherit a team of talented but spoiled gals. Some won't be able to handle being pushed like a championship team is pushed. They've been allowed to pretty much do whatever they've wanted to do since they've been here. Many won't respond and leave.
I disagree, these girls are probably starving for coaching. Most athletes are accustomed to being pushed and will accept it for attaining the results they all desire.. Wins!!

Well, their actions sure do not point in the direction of wanting to win. They look like they could care less. I’m sure part of that has to do with who is leading them, but great athletes want to win no matter who their leader is.

Have u ever played for a coach who has no clue and it has become painfully obvious to the players? I have once. A winning coach can instill these qualities in these players we currently have, I believe..
Most of these girls were All Americans and want to win. Just too early to write them off under the circumstances they have been made to endure. What are they supposed to do when their coach repeatedly says she has no answers..

Maybe some of them are also wanting a new coach----just a thought.

Keep in mind these are kids that have been on easy street for some time. If the right coach is selected, this will be some major culture shock to them. If you've ever had a boss that was fired and the new guy came in guns a blazing, you know what I mean. Some won't survive in all likelihood. I hope you're right though.

I had on the SEC network while working at home last night and they were talking about the Vandy and Tennessee game. One of the lady commentators was saying what a great effort it was for Vandy and really pumping them up and saying what a great upset win it was for them. Andy Landers did not pull any punches. He said that no one should be surprised and that Tennessee has looked lost all year. He was very critical of Holly and that was refreshing to see. I think he might have a pretty good idea what a Lady Vol basketball team is supposed to look like.
