That’s worth significantly less than what they’re worth.

Not sure I agree with that. The day you start paying students like pro athletes is the day it starts to die, eventually reducing their worth to zero. Why? Because then it is just another XFL. You compete for fans with the NFL, while those of us that love college sports specifically because it isn't professional, will bail. There is zero chance that I would pay what I do (or donate) for premium seats if it becomes another Not The NFL League. And I'm certain there are others here that feel the same way.

If you don’t value REAL things, explaining the difference won’t help you BUDDY! Scholarships, tutoring, board, medical care, FOOD, air travel, accommodations on the road, stipends, books, equipment for the games, uniforms and paying everyone who maintains all those, keeping the facilities from falling down on the fans who pay for the games and yes...paying for coaches to train and develop these athletes. Recruiting budget to CONVINCE kids to receive an education that takes a decade to pay back for normal schlubs...and horticulture expenditures to nourish the magic unicorn tree that you socialist hippies shake to make it all work. Thanks BUDDY.
Dang I wish I was as good as you at this..seriously...I suck at arguing.

Sort of. Value as a concept is really complicated. But whatever the case, their earning potential is limited by what others are willing to offer for their services.

As it stands, colleges offer a scholarship, and the NFL offers nothing until they're out of high school for 3 yrs. But starting next year, kids will have the option to play professionally right out of high school. So if they feel like a scholarship is inadequate compensation, for the first time in ages, there will be somewhere else they can go and market their talents for a better deal.

Good thing or bad?
Depends what you mean by bad/good? It’s subjective

Good for competitiveness for athletes imo

That is exactly how I feel about it.

yes.... that’s an individuals choice to “ruin the team” that’s part of freedom. The team isnt entitled to his play
Ah, well, I hope all the individuals are happy when there are no teams for the individuals to play on any more because no one realized that it is in the individuals best interest to have teams more so than just "whatever makes you happy at the moment" type of mentality. I may be wrong. It may be fun to have a continuous carousel of players. I sure wouldn't keep up with recruiting though. I see apathy coming from fans which.....until college football is about as fun as college baseball.

Who said every player gets paid the same or at all? What part of FREE MARKET do you not understand
Let me get this straight. You want to the highest bidders to get the top guys every year, right? So how do you go about doing that and be fair to ALL D1 COLLEGE programs without killing the smaller ones? At some point you’re only going to end up with a handful of teams.

Ah! They’ll be free and HOMELESS. And I’ll be high either way!

Reality bully!

I think a minor league for football will shut this stupidity up. Some kids will do that and make some money, and almost nobody will watch it.

I don't follow UT because of any player, I follow them because I am a Tennessean.

Yep.

I hate the NCAA, but for all its faults, it's not a monopoly. The existence of the NCAA doesn't preclude any other organization from competing with them for players or viewership. If you want an example, junior hockey in Canada competes with the NCAA for players right out of high school. The NBA used to some years back.

I thought that was already happening? According to every poster when bama and Uga land a recruit😂

No it’s not lol. You think a first round pick isn’t worth more than a scholarship😂😂

The average University of Texas football player is now worth more than $670,000 per year
How many 1st round draft picks are there per year? 32 I think. How many draftees per year? 256 ---- In theory (25 schollys per year) there are approximately 3,250 football playing college seniors per year. Since seniors to be can declare that is 6,500 and then you have to factor in the lower divisions like FBS, DIV II, DIV 111, and NAIA. Man, the chances of making an NFL team are astronomical so that free college education with books, living quarters, meals means a lot if kids will take advantage of it.

I feel this way. I watch college football all day Saturday. I never watch the NFL. It's the passion of college that I love. I'd find a new hobby if it goes to that.

I'm sorry, I'm not really trying to argue with you or dogpile, I just wanted to know if you were in favor of student athletes having another option besides college football, namely the XFL.

I know people think it's a joke (honestly, it probably won't last very long), but the reality is we're likely going to be competing with it for players for the next couple of seasons, at least. And JUCOs are going to be hit very hard.

I can't believe Justin Fields super obvious gaming of the system via a divisive topic he knew nobody would meaningfully question because "muh racism" is still dividing us 20 pages later on a day when we hired Derrick ****ing Ansley away from the NFL AND told Alabama and Georgia to suck it in the process...I love this place, man.
