Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

From the Athletic article on the 97 recruiting class. I hope this culture is being established again:

A few freshmen showed up, and new fullback Will Bartholomew found himself floating into the flat during a player-led team drill without coaches in attendance. Manning whipped a ball in his direction. It bounced off his hands and Bartholomew hung his head, jogging back to the huddle.

Manning barked in his direction.

“Will! We run around here. You runback to the huddle,” he yelled.

Later, he pulled Bartholomew to the side and issued another warning.

“If you don’t catch the ball out here, I’m never throwing to you in a real game,” Bartholomew remembered Manning telling him.

“Coming from high school, you go to a voluntary workout and it’s kind of a goof-off, touch football session,” Bartholomew said. “The light bulb went on a little bit for all of us that, this is how it is around here. Coaches aren’t even out there. The best thing Fulmer ever did was get the players to lead and set the expectation. He didn’t have to be the hammer. The players were the hammer.”

This is what we’ve been missing around here for a long time.

We're still missing it. FR leaders are going to have to step up and take over. They'll set the tone for the next four years.

I think we have a few guys: Smith, Chandler, DWA, and if JJ has his head screwed on right, him. But I agree, these young guys gonna have to establish it and continue it

I'm interested to see if Jahmir gets a look at OT this spring. If he can be a factor at OT, then it paves the way for Wanya or Wright to spend a year at OG getting used to SEC play.
I agree that would be good, but the ideal situation would be for 5 guys already on the team to step up and play SEC quality ball so we don't have to lean on two Freshman kids..

I actually chuckled at the ridiculousness of that statement..

Personally I'd rather have someone do it now and not have to wait until next year for someone to set the stage
I hope that Roman Harrison and Crouch become the LL/AL in this class on the defensive side of the ball. Williams and Tank will help there also. And don’t forget about Banks. He’s a leader on that side of the ball (but hopefully moves back to RB).Our biggest offensive recruits though are kinda quiet guys. Wright, Morris, Keyton, and Gray aren’t the guys to get in other people’s face and demand excellence. Hopefully they’ll lead by example. But Newt’s right, we need JG to step up as the QB and lead this team.

Hopefully Bailey will bring it. It starts with the QB. Pretty sad we don't have that now.
eh. i don't think JG is a bad leader. he's just not that kind of alpha.

i don't know who is really on this team. not a ton of veterans coming back. i don't think JJ is that guy, though i'm sure some will look to him. Nigel Warrior could be that guy.

but the reality of it is, there's probaby some guys in this incoming class that are already better suited to be leaders than some of the guys already here. i like the chemistry of this class.

but it'll be interesting to see who steps up this off season.

i would like to think JG takes that step. it would be better if it was him.

Health will drive our OL success. Freshmen or not the talent is there now, especially if Wright is in.

Guys like Jahmir & Carvin getting PT last year and more weight room time has me hopeful.

If all healthy I see JJ, Carvin, Trey, & Kennedy starting...leaves open a spot and you'd hope Morris or Wright earns it.

i know im in minority but i hope we hold on to Richmond. even as a backup.

Yeah I think JG has it in him. Maybe he has a Jordan bone moment where it all clicks, he becomes confident, and he lives up to his potential

Wait do people still think Trey Smith will play?

i don't know that he does. i hope he does. i think it would be better for this season if he does, and asserts himself. like i said, i htink he's a "good" leader.
i'm not 100% certain he's an alpha of alphas.

He doesn't have to be the super alpha. He just has to inspire belief and get the right guys in line.

I think taking his licks last year behind our busted OL and still being productive went a long way in the "actions, not words" sense.
