The program wasn't on life support, but it was definitely on the downswing for more than a few years.

Yeah, well Cal had 4 seasons in the AP top 5 before leaving, so everything since has been a downswing to be fair. And I'm not "sold" on Penny at this point. He's 13-8 in a weak conference using mostly Tubby's guys. Next season will be more telling since it's going to be almost a complete roster roll over. If he can coach then with the level of talent he has, regardless of experience he will win a lotta games.

I think we are a year or so away from 9 wins. But if we go 9-4 this year, Pruitt wins coach of the year easily.
We may very well go 9-4, but if we could some how pull 10-3 I would be like.

It'll be tough though, getting the wins and me doing this dance.

Mincey played, but i wouldn't exactly say he's "expercienced".

there's a lot of ? marks on the DL next year. the only one that has any real production is Gooden.

i like the potential of a lot of htose guys, but it's definitely a ? headed in.
EXPERIENCED as in S&C and practicing. Redshirting potentially advances their grade coming out of high school...it’s an advantage.

Also DJ Jeffries.

Penny has been successful at every stop so far in his career. I understand and agree that his comments post-Tennessee/towards Barnes are dumb and that he should just let it go whether he's asked about it or not.

But he's working with two years of backlogged 2* JUCO recruits because Tubby Smith couldn't get off his ass to recruit even the Memphis kids that wanted to be a Tiger.

I know I'm already hated by some on here for various reasons, but anyone thinking Penny sucks just because of his beef with Barnes or some of the performances this year, is just blinded by their own biases. Memphis will be a tough out next year as we lose Grant and Admiral, and who knows what the 2020 Nashville game will look like.

I think next year is still a win for us especially if Bone, Turner, and Bowden are back. Josiah James helps too. 2020 may be different, depending on who Penny can recruit.

Penny has been fine so far, but he has above average talent in that league.

that's fine, siap, i don't recall any significant production...which is how i took it originally. it certainly can't hurt that any of these guys comign back have at least been here for a full year, know the program, know what htey're supposed to do, been thru the s&c etc....

just haven't seen any production from anyone aside from Gooden, really.

Where are the stops he has been successful at?

I just don't think we lose to USC and Miss St this year....soooooo I think 9 and 10 with a bowl win.
i dont'think those are the two games that would get us to 9 in the regular season.

that would probably require beating everyone on our schedule that we don't consider an L right now, and stealing one from Bama, UGA, UF.

Johnson, Walker, Burns, Pons, Fulkerson all back as well. With how the team talks about JJ I could see him having a big Junior year.

This is they year of zero expectations for Memphis.

Next year is an entirely different story. They'll be expected to get into the NCAA tourney at the minimum. After that, idk, more delusional fans will probably expect him to be like Cal at Kentucky or something. I'd be happy with regular NCAA appearances and hitting the Sweet 16 when we're good enough to.

Sorry, just pushing back a little on the hamfisted "Memphis/Penny is trash" talk.

Btw, "trash" is used almost more liberally than "literally" which I find kind of annoying. If everything is either "trash" or "amaaazing", why do we have all these other adjectives?

he just needs more time on the court with these guys. one of our biggest assets right now is how well all these guys know each other, their tendencies, what they're good at, bad it etc....

if williams and bone come back, i think we're going to be AOK next season....maybe not as good as we are this season, but we'll still be nationally considered and a favorite in the conf.

I think Miss St will have a huge fall off on defense. They lose like 7 starters and two of those are going to be high first rounders on the DL. Fitzgerald is massive loss.

Yeah, I think BYU early, and UofSC, State, and Mizzou will tell the story of the 2019 season. Those are the most intriguing on paper.. (BYU just because they're basically all two years older and they knocked off Wisconsin last year)

@bama, @FL, and UGA are auto losses (0-3)

@Missouri, Miss St, and Scar are toss ups (1-2)

@UK, Vandy, and BYU, and UAB are likely wins (3-1)

GA state and Chattanooga are auto wins (2-0)

Final record 6-6
