I am not familiar with the process but my guess is this is the difference between admitting guilt and telling the NCAA to F off.

I bet Mizzu came clean and the NCAA showing the world not to do so.
I think you are correct. I still don't understand how academic fraud is not a compliance issue when that has everything to do with keeping players eligible to play.

Good at home but always exposed on the road. Will be the same next year when they trot out a lineup of mostly freshman and sophomores. Memphis fans are kidding themselves with their high expectations just because they landed Wiesman.

Also DJ Jeffries.

Penny has been successful at every stop so far in his career. I understand and agree that his comments post-Tennessee/towards Barnes are dumb and that he should just let it go whether he's asked about it or not.

But he's working with two years of backlogged 2* JUCO recruits because Tubby Smith couldn't get off his ass to recruit even the Memphis kids that wanted to be a Tiger.

I know I'm already hated by some on here for various reasons, but anyone thinking Penny sucks just because of his beef with Barnes or some of the performances this year, is just blinded by their own biases. Memphis will be a tough out next year as we lose Grant and Admiral, and who knows what the 2020 Nashville game will look like.

Were not losing Grant.

It's probably a little too early for football predictions, but here's one for you guys:

Tennessee need to win at least ___ games in 2019 for yourself to feel like it was a successful season.

100% wins:
Georgia State
Chatt
UAB

Probable wins:
BYU
at Kentucky
Vandy (at home, new QB, we should have enough horses to not utterly collapse down the stretch)

Toss-ups:
Mississippi State
South Carolina
at Mizzou

Uphill Sledding:
at UF
Georgia
at Alabama

Sweep the first two categories: 6 wins
Win one or two of the toss-ups: 7-8 wins.
Anything on top of that is icing on the cake.

Yes, since he played significant snaps, that means he's experienced.

Gooden is as good or better than anyone we had last year. Solomon is better than anyone we had last year. Them two together > last year.
i don't recall mincey getting "significant" snaps...but whatever. i don't recall any singinficant production i know that......

My guy gonna get drafted if he keeps this up. Was always worried he couldn’t pack on weight up top.
Him going from 195-200 range to 210-215 will be fun to watch. Kamara (just comparing size) was 195 5’10 when he got to UT, put on 15-20 pounds of muscle going into his second season with us. If Ty can do that, woooo boy

Tubby had limited spots his first season, 90s ranking. His 2nd class was 50th and considering that 4 of them are averaging 20+ minutes a game doesn't seem like they were that bad.

I don't like Penny cause of the style of ball he coaches and how much he whines. He may be a good/great coach though and produce. But let's not act like Tubby was garbage and left him with a mess or something...

The only thing Tubby did that Penny might be impacted by is improve the OOC scheduling to face tougher teams.

I agree that mental mistakes were just as big an issue as not having physically talented OL, but I’m not sure that will be an easy fix. Especially if we have to lean on Morris and/or Wright in a very big way. That’s asking a lot.

As for that alone being worth an extra win or two, maybe. Idk. It might have gotten us one more last year (USCe), but the OL wasn’t bad that game anyway.

IMO DL was way higher potential than the OL this year. But there are just so many question marks and we need our JUCOs to be ready to make high level contributions right out of the gate. Until we find out Solomon is eligible and healthy, I’m not getting my hopes up too high for them.
all fair, but i'd just go back to the OL, and say "remember WVU and UF?" not saying we'd of won either of those games, but both games had game altering plays made where our OL not only got beat, but completely whiffed on who was coming, who they should block...defense tee'd off and got giant sacks, TFL's, and created turnovers....and a lot of that stuff happened early in the games. so who knows how those games play out if you don't find yourself in a multi TD game before the 2nd qtr gets started.

agree about Morris/wright. there will be unfair expectations placed on guys like that. OL is still a developmental position, not everyone can do what Trey Smith did. that's not the rule.

but yeah, they'll be expected to contribute for sure. and unfortunately, we'll need them to. but they are talented. i'd feel a littel better about it if both Morris and Wright were already enrolled and both were going thru winter conditioning and spring ball.

the DL, agreed.

Not to mention Tubby's 2 seasons were 2 of the toughest strength of schedule seasons in Memphis' history and he still won 19 & 21 games. Tubby was worse for Memphis than Josh Pastner. Still winning 40 games in two years isn't crap when you run off half of the previous guy's recruits and don't recruit anyone yourself. We should applaud Tubby for going 40-28 and not 28-40? Pastner was in over his head, but Tubby's mindset was stuck in Lubbock. Attendance was at an all-time low and fan apathy was at an all-time high, and in my opinion that's directly correlated to the product on the court.

We'll have to agree to disagree to the level of dumpster fire Memphis was in when they signed Hardaway. The program wasn't on life support, but it was definitely on the downswing for more than a few years.

I’ve grown up in Memphis and around the Memphis program. I’ve followed it closely as I’m exposed to it year-round. The fact is that he is losing 5 rotational seniors and replacing them with true freshman. The only returning players next season that have played meaningful minutes are Harris, Lomax, Jones, and Maurice. Next season will be a lineup of freshman and sophomores with the exception of Maurice who will be the lone senior playing off the bench. Throw in Wiesman, Jeffries, Dandridge and potentially Watford and that’s your main rotation next season. It’s a talented group, but to expect to be a national contender next season is too high. They’ll be a potential top 25 team next season. Penny is inexperienced and unproven and will be coaching a young group. Even Cal has had his struggles playing mostly freshman. The one and done model is inconsistent.

As for Grant, my opinion is that he tests the waters and works out for teams, but ultimately comes back for his senior season. And if Grant comes back, Tennessee will still have a better team than Memphis. Because that would mean only Admiral and Kyle are gone.

Guys - Chaney adds wins immediately to next season. They may match Botch’s best record when counting the bowl game, 9-4. The O scheme will be easier for JG to run along with the blocking sheme. Just holding serve at top 50 in total D adds 2 wins. I think they will improve on D to top 35. Two years in the S&C alone helps. Better LB and S play in the same scheme with CJP’s focus on it will make a big difference IMO.

I think we are a year or so away from 9 wins. But if we go 9-4 this year, Pruitt wins coach of the year easily.
