'19 TN ILB Christopher Russell (Texas A&M signee)

"Most everyone knows where I would like to see Russell in a uniform next year, and for those that don’t, it’s not Arkansas or Texas A&M so you can figure out the rest.

During our talk, I was careful not to let my personal feelings go any farther than admitting I am a Tennessee fan. This kid already has enough on his plate, and doesn’t need me or anyone else telling him what he should do.

It is his future we’re talking about, right?

However, myself along with many more hope that on Feb. 6 at DHS, Russell reaches into a bag inside the little theater and reveals to the world that he indeed has chosen to spend the next four years in Knoxville.

Many people missed the boat on Russell, and if the University of Tennessee is left standing at the alter, many of us will be sad, but happy for Russell at the same time. It really didn’t have to be this way, but it is what it is.

For those that don’t know, Russell attended a summer camp last year at Tennessee, but wasn’t offered a scholarship. In Russell’s words, he believed he “showed out” at the camp. But still, no offer.

Before he verbally committed to the University of Memphis prior to the start of his senior season on the gridiron, Tennessee was contacted again, and yet, no offer was on the table. While I’m not saying the lack of an offer then is a deal-breaker now, I will say I believe a mistake was made by the coaching staff.

It’s not entirely on the coaching staff, but I can convey the young man had his feelings hurt, something he not only admitted, but also something now he seems to have moved past. Russell understands it’s a business, and today he’s simply grateful for the much-deserved attention and yes, Tennessee remains in the hunt for his services.

Something else I came away with after speaking with the menacing defensive threat was a first impression that the young man has been raised right. Answering each and every question with a ‘yes sir’ or ‘no sir’ when required, I got a glimpse of his character, and I liked it, a lot.

This young man will not turn 18 until July, and each and every day someone is asking him, where are you going? I’m amazed at the way Russell is handling the attention, but after speaking with others at the high school, it’s simply the way he carries himself. He’s grounded and hasn’t let the enormous opportunity before him go to his head.

While I don’t know where he will choose to go, I do know he was pretty impressed with Texas A&M, and with good reason. They rolled out the red carpet, I’m sure, in an effort to sign Russell when he made his official visit to the college weeks ago. When I brought it up, he smiled, but he also smiled when I asked about Tennessee.

Chris Russell will make the right decision for Chris Russell, that much I guarantee. Beyond that, I have no idea and don’t expect to know until the rest of us all find out on Feb.6.

I will say this, while things may be bigger in Texas, things are just overall better in Tennessee, but that’s just an opinion."

Two things:
1:For I’ve told you all that he never got upset about the offer from Tennessee, but I also said that Pruitt waited until after he evaluated him to offer. I can tell you that Sherrer and Pruitt did have him on the radar since the summer regardless of an offer. Now, let me just say this part, I’m not aware of him getting mad, upset, or anything else, so there’s that.

2: There were pressure from a coach, that really squeezed things for him to commit, and I’ve also said that, but there wasn’t a coach mentioned.

Yep - if my son, I believe I would encourage him to highlight the M side more and the A side less. Maybe the A side not at all. Why go with farmers fight when you have the whole M thing you could use for your fight.

but I sort of get it, my daughter would think this was cute. Cute outfits, cute names under their cute catch phrase's. They are just adorable.

Per Price it also sounds like this recruitment is pretty wide open. Seems the school that is the most recent visit gains the momentum. Weird recruitment overall.

Would seem to play well for us since visiting the last weekend before signing day.

Most people are not bigoted.

I mean...I'd think most people would find this weird.

A&M has great facilities and a lot of money but I just don't know if I could live in College Station, Texas and deal with that. Plus the maroon is really ugly. Though I'm biased from sharing a conference with them for a long time.

We get the last visit and he is a Vol if we want him to be...

I would be proud for my kid to go to A&M. Great school and great environment.

It's a little creepy though. Not sure what all their military folk is all about these days, since they are a long time from their formation, but it feels like something from North Korea. Military should have nothing to do with an educational university that is not part of a branch. Subliminal messaging to many future leaders.

Texas A&M University is a product of bygone times. They're one of 6 senior military colleges in the United States. The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute still require all of their male students to join the cadet corps, and with many students receiving military commissions. Schools like A&M and Virginia Tech dropped the cadet corps requirements after World War 2, so it's entirely voluntary these days. It's their way of honoring their heritage and legacy as a school.

Should I have added a smiley face so people would get that was tongue-in-cheek?
