"Most everyone knows where I would like to see Russell in a uniform next year, and for those that donāt, itās not Arkansas or Texas A&M so you can figure out the rest.
During our talk, I was careful not to let my personal feelings go any farther than admitting I am a Tennessee fan. This kid already has enough on his plate, and doesnāt need me or anyone else telling him what he should do.
It is his future weāre talking about, right?
However, myself along with many more hope that on Feb. 6 at DHS, Russell reaches into a bag inside the little theater and reveals to the world that he indeed has chosen to spend the next four years in Knoxville.
Many people missed the boat on Russell, and if the University of Tennessee is left standing at the alter, many of us will be sad, but happy for Russell at the same time. It really didnāt have to be this way, but it is what it is.
For those that donāt know, Russell attended a summer camp last year at Tennessee, but wasnāt offered a scholarship. In Russellās words, he believed he āshowed outā at the camp. But still, no offer.
Before he verbally committed to the University of Memphis prior to the start of his senior season on the gridiron, Tennessee was contacted again, and yet, no offer was on the table. While Iām not saying the lack of an offer then is a deal-breaker now, I will say I believe a mistake was made by the coaching staff.
Itās not entirely on the coaching staff, but I can convey the young man had his feelings hurt, something he not only admitted, but also something now he seems to have moved past. Russell understands itās a business, and today heās simply grateful for the much-deserved attention and yes, Tennessee remains in the hunt for his services.
Something else I came away with after speaking with the menacing defensive threat was a first impression that the young man has been raised right. Answering each and every question with a āyes sirā or āno sirā when required, I got a glimpse of his character, and I liked it, a lot.
This young man will not turn 18 until July, and each and every day someone is asking him, where are you going? Iām amazed at the way Russell is handling the attention, but after speaking with others at the high school, itās simply the way he carries himself. Heās grounded and hasnāt let the enormous opportunity before him go to his head.
While I donāt know where he will choose to go, I do know he was pretty impressed with Texas A&M, and with good reason. They rolled out the red carpet, Iām sure, in an effort to sign Russell when he made his official visit to the college weeks ago. When I brought it up, he smiled, but he also smiled when I asked about Tennessee.
Chris Russell will make the right decision for Chris Russell, that much I guarantee. Beyond that, I have no idea and donāt expect to know until the rest of us all find out on Feb.6.
I will say this, while things may be bigger in Texas, things are just overall better in Tennessee, but thatās just an opinion."
