Horse and buggy guy?

I have to work with dealer principals on the regular. The vast majority of them have egos bigger than those of doctors, while cutting as many corners around advertising guidelines as they can get away with. And they think they're entitled to the massive bonuses they receive from the manufacturer for hassling customers over free floormats.

The auto industry is a necessary evil.

Yep. Being a powerhouse program in all marquee sports strengthens the brand. UT used to take football recruits to LV games because the atmosphere was so impressive. Not anymore.

The LVs program is headed over the cliff-- just like football did under Butch. UT was reluctant to make a change, allowed coaches in way over their heads to flounder too long and crashed the program. Unnecessary and unfortunately, a destructive pattern.
We could always hang our hat on the Lady Vols. They were as consistent as taxes, now look at what the program has become.

I don't have that issue with car salesmen. I tell them what I'm going to give for what I want. They either take it or I roll on to the next dealership.

The car business is the easiest way to (legitimately) make a lot of money. But you have to be pretty much solely driven by money to last in it. Long hours, pure commission-based pay, and you're shoveling bullcrap down people's throats all day long, day in and day out. But a good salesman can clear six figures with no college degree and no prior experience or skillset other than a willingness to show up at the car lot every day and make sales.

On the JJP discussion, our problem for too many years has been that we rely on every 4 and 5 star to work out. They don’t all work out immediately and some need a few years of development. It’s why you need 12 to 15 of them every year to have quality depth for those who don’t...

Not sure if JJP is a stud or a dud, but like prior poster let’s give him spring and fall camp to improve.
Agree. Seems like everyone has “passed” on Emerson and JJP just because they had a redshirt year and we didn’t see them play. With all the attrition that goes on in the off season, if players like this weren’t bought in I’m sure they would rethink being on the team. They’re fine, good grief

One time I was dealing with a dealer and he was about to give me the price and interest I wanted. Then his manager came over and "took over" the deal. Needless to say I did not buy a car from that lot.

Congrats. Many others either don't have the cash, financing, or purchasing power otherwise to handle the situation with confidence. And with dealers so averse to telling you the bottom line, and then slapping needless add-ons and fees after the deal has been agreed to, it's not exactly controversial to think it's has the propensity to be a scummy profession.

And again, my point focused on the dealership owners/principals, not the individual salespeople. Of course an dealer would rent a billboard to whine about the outcome of an NFL game.

There are decent, down-to-earth folks out there who do it honestly. Mostly they're in smaller markets where there's less competition, so they don't really have to pull the shady crap to get ahead.

But you get to a saturated market like Miami, Atlanta, New Jersey, Chicago, or LA.. yeesh

Blackshear was hugely talented in HS, but a troubled kid. At one point his senior year in HS was arrested for entering a home in Bluffton and grabbing a woman's purse. Also got shot at a bar early in his time at USCe. From all reports he's cleaned his act up, but not sure he will ever reach his potential.

Kind of like doctors, when they get too big people are just numbers$$.

The last time I went to a dealer a salesman and me had a deal worked out, but when the Sales Manager got involved and the price raised another $700. I walked away not because I couldn't afford the extra money, but because of the basic principal of the deal was broken.

Negotiated my last car purchase online. Was in and out of the dealership in less than 2hrs, in Atlanta no less. I got lucky. Seemed to be really upfront and no BS about additional charges on top of list price, which another dealer of the same manufacturer did charge more fees not listed in the price quote. I definitely hear what you’re saying about dealers though, which is why I went through the interwebs
