This is something a lot of people don't realize. NFL refs are only part time and have other jobs taking some of their focus away from being the best they could be. Amazing that the NFL is still cheap about that.[/QUOT no wonder they can get paid off.

Since we will be riding with JG, I repeat I am thrilled we have Chaney as OC. Part of the issue with JG last year was Helton's scheme and play calling. JG has talent and needs coached up by one of the best. He needs a system he can succeed in. He's not had that since his arrival.

But let's not pretend he has been all that. A QB has to be mobile in the pocket and not a stationary target that holds the ball too long. JG's inability to make pre-snap reads and slow coverage reads caused those bad things to happen many times. They are seen in the O scoring and total offense stats, which leads to 5-7 records. The O with him at the helm was relatively easy to scheme a D against. Hopefully that changes this season. If there is insufficient progress we will see Shrout IMO.

In JG’s defense..... how many QBs are successful with the leagues worst offensive line..... the team is dead last in rushing offense and routinely has to throw in 2nd or 3rd and long situations?

I actually agree and could have gone further with the Helton discussion causing some of the issue. But JG did the same things the previous year in Butch's system with a similar quality O-line. Butch's system told the D's where the play was going by formation and motion. Most of us could call the play in advance of the snap. Helton's had no consistency in play calling and asked less mobile linemen to be mobile. I think Chaney fixes a lot of that. Hopefully he can get JG to react to what he sees and move in the pocket much better because he has the arm and toughness.

I was pretty sure that they have recently made a few full time employees. Just found it. They hired 24 as full time employees this year. It’s a mix of head officials, umpires, and various judges.
The issue of part time officials is so overrated. What are they going to do, watch film all week leading up to a game? They don’t just show up and officiate, and they already get compilations of the plays worth discussion. Have camps during the offseason where they officiate mock games? Who are they going to get to play in those games, athletes not on par with NFL players, thereby getting them acclimated to a slower game speed? I’m sure that there are reasonable thoughts as to how to strategize, and what benefits making officials full time would bring, but I haven’t seen any yet that make enough sense to truly make a difference.
Well, if it's their livelihood and not a part-time gig, maybe they will spend time honing their craft. Who knows? We do know that the system as it is does not work.

Because Pennington points out a stat that shows that the other 3 top teams have more quality wins than Tennessee and uses that as a devil's advocate position to argue why we might have not gotten the number 1 position, that must mean he hates Tennessee and is a bad person. I always hear about how bad The Sports Source show is, but when I watch it, I don't see it. I dont agree with everything said on there, but Pennington and others do make some good points from time to time. People who say that Pennington hates Tennessee obviously doesn't watch the show. Throughout the basketball season, he has said on many occasions that this is the best basketball team he has ever seen in school history.
I have listened to him around here for years. He is a Hyams crony. I am not sure if he still has Cavalaris and Hodge on the show, but they are not good either. He is not objective. He is yellow journalism at its very worst. You are entitled to your opinion, but I am very tired of his schtick.
