But seriously, make refs full time, pay them a lot, and let them know that if they screw up too many times, they are done.
This is something a lot of people don't realize. NFL refs are only part time and have other jobs taking some of their focus away from being the best they could be. Amazing that the NFL is still cheap about that.

Then they need to be able to review other penalties like the play clock expiring, the multiple missed face masks, and the other calls that crew missed. It was a very poorly officiated game all around and people are only talking about that missed call because of the timing.
They missed calls on both sides throughout the whole game. But, one so egregious as the PI, helmet to helmet, defenseless player, or whatever you want to call it is the call that turned the game. We wouldn't have players and all the talking heads going on about it all day if it was just any other missed call.

Since we will be riding with JG, I repeat I am thrilled we have Chaney as OC. Part of the issue with JG last year was Helton's scheme and play calling. JG has talent and needs coached up by one of the best. He needs a system he can succeed in. He's not had that since his arrival.

But let's not pretend he has been all that. A QB has to be mobile in the pocket and not a stationary target that holds the ball too long. JG's inability to make pre-snap reads and slow coverage reads caused those bad things to happen many times. They are seen in the O scoring and total offense stats, which leads to 5-7 records. The O with him at the helm was relatively easy to scheme a D against. Hopefully that changes this season. If there is insufficient progress we will see Shrout IMO.

The NFL is all about the show and money. Integrity of the game is a joke. Worst OT method of any sport. Part time officials calling games in an industry/business that produces $14+ B in revenues a year. Insane. Even a newb at it would know to have the replay booth review potential targeting/defenseless player PI's. CFB is way ahead of the NFL in all of it and even they still have more than can do to improve the game.

Wentz > Foles, by a lot. Foles is only good at an O tailored to RPO stuff. Wentz can do it all, he just came back too soon from his ACL. He's the future for the Eagles.

I was pretty sure that they have recently made a few full time employees. Just found it. They hired 24 as full time employees this year. It’s a mix of head officials, umpires, and various judges.

Why not all of them? Cause they're cheap on things they shouldn't be cheap on. For no reason.

The issue of part time officials is so overrated. What are they going to do, watch film all week leading up to a game? They don’t just show up and officiate, and they already get compilations of the plays worth discussion. Have camps during the offseason where they officiate mock games? Who are they going to get to play in those games, athletes not on par with NFL players, thereby getting them acclimated to a slower game speed? I’m sure that there are reasonable thoughts as to how to strategize, and what benefits making officials full time would bring, but I haven’t seen any yet that make enough sense to truly make a difference.

The problem is that the NFL is at a crossroads, liability wise. I understand improving officiating, but most decisions these days are made with player safety in mind. The NFL wants to limit the length of games at all possible, in fear of players on a 53 man roster getting hurt.

I know the targeting rule is different in the NFL, and they don’t want guys suspended every week.

As they admitted, the officials simply made a mistake. IMO, they were tentative and afraid to make a game altering call, which, ironically, they did. I enjoy watching the NFL for the most part. I don’t necessarily agree with any conspuracy theories about the SB because of past history. I will leave that to the NBA, as they are on another level. I just think the game is really quick now, and they simply made a bad no call.

But if folks want to continue to watch more football, some concessions (regarding player safety) will continue to be made.

Because Pennington points out a stat that shows that the other 3 top teams have more quality wins than Tennessee and uses that as a devil's advocate position to argue why we might have not gotten the number 1 position, that must mean he hates Tennessee and is a bad person. I always hear about how bad The Sports Source show is, but when I watch it, I don't see it. I dont agree with everything said on there, but Pennington and others do make some good points from time to time. People who say that Pennington hates Tennessee obviously doesn't watch the show. Throughout the basketball season, he has said on many occasions that this is the best basketball team he has ever seen in school history.

Not to argue, but the game itself is difficult to officiate, even for the very best officiating crews. You've got 22 very large and very fast men playing on a fairly large playing field under a very complex set of rules, all the while trying to knock the crap out of each other.

One of the big turn-offs to both college & the NFL are the lengthy delays resulting from replays. I don't care if they review every play, but they better come up with an improved and expedited review process. The first step should be to do away with the charade of the head referee meandering over to a monitor on the sidelines, putting a headset on and then begin reviewing the play...meanwhile, the fan at home has already seen the play 7 different times from 7 different angles and at 7 different speeds. We've got all this fantastic technology...use it to its maximum, keep the pace of the game fast and reduce officiating errors.

Some of this really shouldn't be that complicated.

[moving to a more appropriate thread]

A football game has several missed calls. People tend to only focus on the bad calls at the end of the game. The fact of he matter is, it was a terrible pass that should have been intercepted. They needed a bail out. They should have gotten it, but it's no different than the other missed calls

its hard to pin a loss on one play, that that missed call shifted the saints win probability 20 percentage points, from 98% to 78%. had it been called, saints could have run the clock down to 15 seconds and kicked the field goal. the repercussions of each play are magnified the further into the game they occur, this one was a doozy.

Not only did the officials blow the call, they cost the Saints a chance to put the game out of reach. According to Brian Burke of ESPN, had the Rams been called for defensive pass interference, the Saints would have been able to run the clock down to about 15 seconds, and attempted a field goal from around the 10-yard line. By his calculations, that would have given New Orleans a 98 percent win probability instead of a 78 percent win probability after the no-call.

Not really talking salary, but training and qualifications. Something is obviously not working.

My guess is they are trained really well. Not sure anyone can speak on that unless they know.

Again, as I stated above, the NFL understands they have liability issues, and some officials are going to err on the side of caution. That obviously didn’t happen yesterday. It was a missed call. Humans are going to miss calls. I get more upset when a review is not called correctly because humans have the benefit of technology.
