I am amazed at the amount of people that I work with that live paycheck to paycheck. I'm on my 3rd week of a free vacation. Told my supervisor I'll stay home for as long as it takes. "But you might not get paid!!!"...Ok. Plebes.

This is a lot more common than it should be. A woman in our area has been here over 35 years, she’s got a pension and 100% of her healthcare will be paid by the company. She told this other guy she doesn’t think she can ever retire. How? Where is your money? There are so many people who contribute the minimum to their 401k to get the match and that’s it. No stock portfolio or any other investments. Whatever is in the bank is free to spend. We have employees who stay two nights in a hotel and have to be reimbursed IMMEDIATELY because they can’t cover $300. It’s dumbfounding to me.

I've tried to have this debate with folks. I think providing for healthcare should be a core function of government. It's certainly more basic than things like education, national parks, foreign aid, disaster relief, arts funding, etc.

I cannot palm my face hard enough.

Why? Because they have to pay directly vs. being taxed to death. Not one of mine prefers their old one. Conundrum.
I will say my German friends think their system is okay, but they all have the supplemental policies. My Canadian friends and Brits despise theirs.

It would be nice if that sort of thing worked. The go fund me effort for the wall has come up way, way short even though the idea is very popular with so many on the Right. I know you probably don't believe it but there are some things only governments can do in a country of 300M.

I have pretty liberal friends and they tend to be under 50, so they've not needed a lot of medical care in their home countries. That probably helps explain the difference. They certainly are shocked at how much it costs to get routine medical care and have a baby delivered in the US.

Our bill from having our son delivered was over 45k. Insurance covered almost all of it, but it was a completely routine birth. Something is wrong if it costs nearly 45k to have a baby delivered, don't you think?

You need to go to a different hospital. My wife had an unplanned C section with a brief NICU stay and it wasn’t half of that. First kid wasn’t 20% of that.

Also remember that the price is never the price. As a lawyer you should know that. Your bill rate and your percentage of standard on the invoice are very different. If you went into that hospital with no insurance paying cash your bill would be nowhere near $45k.

One way or another, we're paying for indigent care. Whether it's $45K stay to deliver a baby or exorbitant tax rates to fund a single payer system. The problem becomes one, the enormous ever-growing bureaucracy a govt. system creates and two, what's happened in universal hc countries where the number of physicians are insufficient (as they try to contain costs) to provide services and procedures in a timely manner.

It probably will but like I said there are some things governments have to do. We will not have universal healthcare or a wall if it's left up to charitable individuals to fund it.
