They worked great as a unit...tailored to Emmitt’s skills. Only athletic superstars were Erik Williams before the car accident and Larry Allen later on. Rest were former DL like Tuinei, overweight journeymen like Newton, underweight average like Mark Stepnoski and Plan B free agents like Kevin Gogan. Jimmy envisioned what he wanted and cobbled them together. If it hadn’t been these same guys it would have been others. Centering the whole attack around Emmitt and leaning on the opposing defense until it tired out and Aikman, Irvin, Harper et al tore the rest apart. They accomplished what Jimmy designed and deserve the praise. They opened the holes and Emmitt tirelessly exploited them over and over during the game. If they hadn’t, Jimmy would have gotten guys that could. They did a pretty good job protecting Troy but not before he became the poster child of concussions and had a video game mocking that. They weren’t this force of nature without Emmitt. So the fallacy that he was crap without them is bs. It’s the opposite.

i don't think anyone is saying he's crap.

i think everyone's saying he wouldn't be what we know him to be today w/out the rest of the parts around him. and your contetion that the O line has Emmit to thank for the accolades just doesn't hold water. virtually everyone thinks that O line was one of the best to EVER play the game. that just doesnt happen because of one running back and his talent. we'd be taking "making htose around him better" to a whole new level........

They got their proper accolades for blocking for him. They don’t get those Pro Bowls blocking for Blair Thomas...tho they did when he signed as Smith’s backup.

I don’t think either one will put up with a meddling HC. And I don’t want to hire someone just to hire someone else next year.

This statement is moronic. If you don’t want to put up with a “meddling” head coach, then you better just keep your ass at home because ALL head coaches are involved in all facets of the game. If they aren’t, then they aren’t much of a head coach!

That same line didn’t go to 2012. When did Tuinei die? And I dispute this rushing greatness before that. His last few seasons in Dallas were yard add ons to reach Payton’s record and they weren’t exactly piling up. Team had started teetering under Switzer and fell by the time Gailey was fired. “Didn’t fall off much”? Didn’t need to.

Ok... better question, when did Emmitt play behind a bad line? Dallas has had great run blocking historically almost always.

Just 2 years prior to Emmitt being drafted Walker went over 1500 yards.

Agreed. If it is Pruitt, than it is a problem and that is why IMO that this hiring is not going to be a quick one for I think he is laying the law of the land of how it will operate for him and not thru him. Then once he gets that clarified and is comfortable with whoever he wants to have I think he will minimize his activity on that side of the ball. I think that is why Friend is not an option at all. Plus, Pruitt is putting all he has into recruiting and the OC will workout. I also think that whoever the OC is will in fact be a better to good to great recruiter also. I think that JP is putting all the apples on recruiting to get players and turn this around now not a 5 yr plan.

It will probably be Clemson and Bama next year too. Clemson is returning pretty much everyone on offense and almost all their skill guys are currently FR or SO’s.

They return almost everyone on D minus the DL, but they are loaded there with Xavier Thomas, Juston Foster, and others.

And play in the ACC weak

If you were Pruitt and trying to find an OC that meshed well with our current offensive players and worked well with our current recruiting footprint, what would it look like?

How would Villanova ever have had a chance to beat Georgetown with that mindset. Occasionally a David beats a Goliath. That is why I watch... for the improbable, which is why I love sports... It's like a Lighthouse of hope, most times you drown tho

The odds of a David beating Goliath in basketball isn't out of the question. But I ain't holding my breath in college football, primarily due to the fact that each team has 30-40 players making important contributions. In basketball, if you shut down 1 or 2 players, maybe another has an off-day, and bingo, you've got a major upset. This dynamic simply doesn't exist in college football.

I'll watch but I'm not counting the hours to kickoff. Personally, I think seeing the same couple of teams year in and year out is bad for the sport and I think a lot of people feel the same way...and they may not even realize it.

But I ain't holding my breath in college football, primarily due to the fact that each team has 30-40 players making important contributions. All the other football divisions have a larger playoff

Then people should watch all those other divisions if all they care about are playoffs.

If you're point is simply that Smith being a good back helped the OL become Pro Bowlers, I don't disagree. If you're point is that the OL was -only- Pro Bowlers because of Smith, I disagree.

Mainly because as I've already pointed out Dallas was successful before and even after Smith as a good/great rushing offense. Despite a variety of coaching changes.
