Sorry for the length of the post in advance, but some on here don't get what it takes to get what they want and we can knock a lot of that out if they choose to read.
No program succeeds at a high level without a competent QB for that level - good or elite. You can get to that 9-10 win mark with good QB play along with good to even elite level talent around him, but you will not get to elite as a team. That's the situation with JG. He cannot lift the team on his shoulders and will them to win. He needs strong talent around him to perform at a good level. So the only question is whether it is worth another year delaying Shrout or Mauer while JG learns yet another offensive scheme before he leaves UT for good. Maybe he chooses a different path on his own - we will see.
Bama got to elite with exceptional talent around the good QB until Tua came along. But it was because nobody had their level of roster talent. Now they have both. Clemson was the next to get there with the elite talent upgrade around just a good QB until - Watson came along to complete the package. UGA is working on the same concept. With the roster talent upgrade, they will soon learn if Fromm can step up to elite. We know he is very good. But there are already two programs that are fully elite ahead of them. So they have more work to do to prove it up.
That didn't exist when Bama first started dominating. Bama and Clemson have now separated themselves with UGA trying to join in. Dabo was laughed at for years for never being able to win big games. Who's laughing now? CJP knows all this and IMO, this is why he is being so careful with his OC hire. He knows the elite QB arrives on campus in 2020 and he needs an OC who will stay here that he can trust who will develop Bailey and the O to elite. By then the talent upgrade around him will be well underway to nearly completed.
As fans we want a 2 year turnaround when even with elite coaches it takes 3+ to get to the potential playoff level. I see this being a 4-6 year deal for CJP because he has to get there as a HC along with getting his staff/system ingrained into the program's DNA. He was delayed a year on O due to Helton. The rest is well underway and the roster is getting seriously upgraded. As fans - stay the course - grind - strain. No more hot sauce needed.
