They knew when they were designing it that if you messed with things too much you'd take away from both the regular season and the bowl season and that those were the two things that made college football unique. The playoff system just doesn't feel the same. It doesn't excite me the same way the old setup did. Some folks want NFL-lite (more and more playoffs where the regular season matters less and less). I don't. I want college ball where the regular season matters and there's still a lot of pride to play for in bowls.

Most years pre-BCS, it was down to the winners of certain bowls and an undefeated Penn State freshly locked in to Big 10 Rose Bowl obligations would get jobbed. Other years they would make the national narrative fit to what teams had the opportunity to play for it all. All other bowls were trash back then too. We just didn’t have social media to grouse over it as much. These athletes sitting out bowl games to protect themselves for the draft hasn’t helped either. I’m nostalgic for the old bowl system like the Israelites were for Egypt when they got tired of manna every day.

Probably. It's a shame though. It's taken a lot of fun out of the college game and completely screwed up the viewing schedule (and I really think that's a lot of it too). Some of the excitement was in the unrelenting binge watching almost all the games in one day.

Nebraska was the only one unranked. Mauled Iowa and Northwestern prior. Both were better than this season’s Mizzou and Vandy.

In response to a bunch of other media types throwing stuff out there. There is apparently some smoke around Sarkisian to UT. I just don’t get why you think that’s so unlikely. Unless another NFL team is ready to name him OC (and I’m not seeing anything like that out there), I don’t see why Sark would be considered such a long shot as Vols OC. $1 million + as Vols OC > NFL position coach.

Earlier this month, coach Mike Gundy said he hadn’t heard from anyone at Tennessee, but that he also typically stays out of his assistant coaches’ business unless they’re actually leaving to take another job.

“I think that there’s probably some truth to parts of it and then I think that sometimes it’s blown out of proportion,” Gundy said. “But what happens now in most cases, if guys are on the road recruiting, they don’t even show up at a place and interview. They meet somewhere in recruiting in Dallas at night and they’ll do it at a hotel or whatever. I’ve told guys on our staff, if they want to do that it doesn’t bother me. I’m not getting involved in that anyway. I’ve never tried to keep a coach here that wanted to leave. So I said if you guys end up taking jobs you need to come tell me, otherwise you don’t need to waste my time. That’s kind of the policy that we have here.”

1) The “I’ve never tried to change a coaches mind” line is telling.
2) he’s trolling us with that “meeting in Dallas” line. That’s where we met with him multiple times for the HC search.

On one I agree but on two I don't think he's trolling. It's definitely a reference to those meetings but not necessarily a troll. Gundy considered us, I just think ultimately it came down to leaving home for him and he realized he didn't really want to unless we made him an offer he couldn't refuse. We didn't. T. Boone bumped his pay while playing the home field advantage.

Also that reaction was from 2 weeks ago and back when Yurcich said nothing was going on.

With you. It’s inevitable, but bowls are hanging on through politics et al. One of the big bowls has a guy in charge and ONLY organizes that bowl and nets $1 mil a year. Gotta break that racket but making the bowls more a part of expanded playoffs could be the solution.

With the increasing number of players sitting out of bowls with no chance for a championship, I think a bowl/playoff system is inevitable; even players sitting out of the Sugar Bowl. Some of these bowls have a "Pro Bowl" feel to them. Watched WVU SYU warmups and when I saw Grier wasn't playing, what's the point. I'd love to see a big tiered playoff/conference championship/bowl system.

It’s good for the younger guys especially with the new redshirt rule. You can get them some experience that they might not of normally got.

The FCS playoffs are quality football! Add a couple billion dollars into that mix and there’s not a bowl game in history that matches the energy imo.

I can’t remember the timeline but could Yurcich have already signed an agreement with UT before all the OSU stuff happened? And they just agreed to not announce it until after their bowl game?

There’s legalities involved. Pruitt signed his MOU and still worked for Bama. Not sure how that works if you’re moving laterally.

It's possible. He said the whole nothing's going on bit at the beginning of the month. Yesterday he danced around the same question. That's what I find odd about it. There's been enough time for things to have changed between answer 1 and answer 2 but who knows.

I just remember it from the old days, when it was just once in a while, and due to a team partying way too hard before the game.

I took it as just one more guy speculating, for clicks. Everybody just seems to be throwing stuff at the wall.

It seems impossible for anyone to accept when there's no news, so they just imagine some.
