I just don’t get it... why would Baylor look so much better than us

ND Irish is in trouble and should not be undefeated going off most of what everyone in this thread is saying since they hardly beat Vandy in a low score game. Kentucky beat Florida, Vols lost to Florida then the vols beat Kentucky. Heck lsu beat Georgia and Georgia had Bama beat almost. Head to head is all that counts.

I watched the first 2 scores by Baylor in the 2nd half and moved on to Chopped reruns. That said Baylor had much better and quicker players on the field than Vandy did.

where are the "replace JG and we would win" folks at? clearly other players and culture play a role in consistent winning. Baylor is better than Vandy and Vandy is better than UT. those are the facts as it stands today. things can change in a year (see Florida) and i expect our coaches to be the player development coaches they were before they came to UT. outside of DL, this team is capable of making a run at the East on paper. Winning at Auburn and losing at Vandy is an example of this team's talent level and current culture. There were rumors of players electing not to play during games when Butch was coach. we have seen how CJP handles those types of situation. Culture is a big deal to 19-23 old kids. Winning is infectious (see Baker Mayfield, Browns). guys coming in next year and most of the returners have a new mind set.

Your Baker Mayfield quote kind of invalidates the first couple of sentences in your post.

Either one guy makes the difference or he doesnt. But both arguements shouldnt be presented in the same post...

Our defense was outschemed versus South Carolina and Vanderbilt, unfortunately.

That said, there were some mitigating factors. Our lack of depth on D allow offenses to wear us down. Some players from "the old regime" clearly quit in that Vandy game. DK Jr has never IMO gotten back to 100%. And then most of these players are better suited to play in a 4-3 defense than a 3-4. But even with those issues, I felt like our defensive strategies were subpar in those two particular games.

In spite of the fact that offense got much of the criticism here, that one is much simpler IMO. We lack talent, depth, and size on the O-line. That's it. That explains 85%+ of our woes on offense. If we had Bama or Georgia's O-line, the offense would've looked significantly better.

There a re many teams out there who have no where near Bama or Georgia talent and yet managed to look far superior to us.

It is more than a talent issue.

After reading this I am convinced the Vols got hosed and should be in the 4 team playoff this weekend.

Stability, plain and simple. When you have guys running the same system for many years compared to a team constantly changing coaching staff and systems recruiting rankings don’t mean as much
Stability? Matt Rhule is in only his second year there, won only 1 game in 2017. They’re on their 3rd head coach in the last 4 years following a major scandal that ran Briles out of town. Nobody in Baylor has been “running the sand system for many years”.

Matt Rhule had back to back 10 win seasons at Temple and was a coaching hire coup at the time given Baylor's mess...

Jeremy Pruitt is learning on the job and had only lukewarm interest from 1 other team...

Don't forget that WE are Vandy's Alabama, we are their whole season. As long as they beat us, their coach won't be on a hot seat. So, we get every ounce of energy, hate, determination, and try hard attitude on every play against vandy. They didn't look like that last night.

Against Vandy?

This Baylor team is completely devoid of talent. There’s is no way Baylor goes on the road and beats a Top 25 SEC West Team. There is no way Baylor thrashes Kentucky. But yet they are the dominant team over Vandy?

I’m not asking for “because we suck” type of comments, I’m genuinely just lost here. Was this just really a matter of Butch’s leftovers not wanting to play anymore? Did Vandy just have that much of an “on” night against us? Did we get outschemed?

Any football experts that would love to give their two cents would be much appreciated.

There was a point of inversion once UT began to lose regularly to Vandy. It's a bit like being in a black hole where the laws of time and physics that we all rely on to define reality are no longer true. Up is down down is up green is apple your grandma is a fruit fly. Literally nothing makes sense once you're in the black hole.

People just dont get how epically terrible it is to ever lose to Vandy. Once you fall behind Vandy, even figuring out how to improve becomes impossible.

Yep he’s done an excellent job, good coach. He had to rebuild after the scandal under the previous coach, A.D., president, etc. not surprised no one caught this earlier.
Yeah... The stability argument is a little comical. People forgot Art Briles and Ken Starr very quickly.

Well for one thing they have a functional offensive line with a mobile QB that can throw. In addition they have enough talent at WR to cover their missing star, Jalen Hurd...
Now that's rubbing salt into the wound...

PS . Vandy really hates us and their QB always played well against us.

Think about it this way: The way Baylor handled Vandy, think god we did not have to play them!!!

A real offensive coord could have taken our talent and beaten lots of team. Like I have said numerous times............Pruit tried to take spread talent and run a power offensive.............NO WAY !!!!!! I think he has discovered that but doubt he will ever admit it. Lets face it, Helton sucked as an offensive coord !!! Just strictly my opinion.
Bull SH--. We could have beaten a few teams, not lots. Most of the teams we could have beaten, had names and locations most of us would have had to look up to find out anything about them.

If you believe some of the posts a few of our players made. They didn't want to win the Vandy game because they didn't want to go to a nothing bowl and miss time with their families.
At least that is what their posts said and from watching them play the last to games I believe they just didn't put out the effort to win.
Then if this is true, Pruitt should send them home to their families. It doesn't matter how good they are or may someday be. This attitude is like the "black death" for the whole team. You just have to bite the bullet, and remove the illness.

Our offense couldn't stay on the field and the defense wore out in the second half, for some reason we can't keep the same 5 on the field for more than 2 games without some kind of injury and Trey wasn't the same Trey that we seen as a freshman he came in at the end of fall camp and really wasn't in football shape plus the blood clot issue he has slowed him down a lot, for some reason the last 4 to 5 years we lose our top 2 or 3 OL's every year it seem's and with no depth there the offense can't get going and the defense stays on the field way to much and we wear down by the start of the fourth quarter.

If you are confused about College Football, then you have watched it enough. Just because one team beat a perceived better team, does not mean anyone perceived as better will beat them as well. That is why we watch, we are all hoping its our team that beats Bama, Georgia, Florida in the same year, that is what college football is all about, the uncertainty of the outcome, before the game is already played.
