I just don’t get it... why would Baylor look so much better than us

Against Vandy?

This Baylor team is completely devoid of talent. There’s is no way Baylor goes on the road and beats a Top 25 SEC West Team. There is no way Baylor thrashes Kentucky. But yet they are the dominant team over Vandy?

I’m not asking for “because we suck” type of comments, I’m genuinely just lost here. Was this just really a matter of Butch’s leftovers not wanting to play anymore? Did Vandy just have that much of an “on” night against us? Did we get outschemed?

Any football experts that would love to give their two cents would be much appreciated.

Now you can understand just how bad our OL blocking was this year. Of course the DL wasn't any better.

where are the "replace JG and we would win" folks at? clearly other players and culture play a role in consistent winning. Baylor is better than Vandy and Vandy is better than UT. those are the facts as it stands today. things can change in a year (see Florida) and i expect our coaches to be the player development coaches they were before they came to UT. outside of DL, this team is capable of making a run at the East on paper. Winning at Auburn and losing at Vandy is an example of this team's talent level and current culture. There were rumors of players electing not to play during games when Butch was coach. we have seen how CJP handles those types of situation. Culture is a big deal to 19-23 old kids. Winning is infectious (see Baker Mayfield, Browns). guys coming in next year and most of the returners have a new mind set.

Vols have been unstable at coaching for like 10 years . Player development lack of players . And Vandy sells out to beat UT they would not care if they lost every game they played as long as they beat UT.

Our defense was outschemed versus South Carolina and Vanderbilt, unfortunately.

That said, there were some mitigating factors. Our lack of depth on D allow offenses to wear us down. Some players from "the old regime" clearly quit in that Vandy game. DK Jr has never IMO gotten back to 100%. And then most of these players are better suited to play in a 4-3 defense than a 3-4. But even with those issues, I felt like our defensive strategies were subpar in those two particular games.

In spite of the fact that offense got much of the criticism here, that one is much simpler IMO. We lack talent, depth, and size on the O-line. That's it. That explains 85%+ of our woes on offense. If we had Bama or Georgia's O-line, the offense would've looked significantly better.

Baylor and Vandy are both better football teams than us even though we’ve had higher ranked recruiting classes. Kinda points to coaching and talent development over the years.

Just because Team and Talent both start with a "T" doesn't mean they are related. Most everyone who played the game should know this!

We need one of those b12 offenses. They put up 600+ yards and made VU look silly....and theyre a mediocre b12 offense. Averaged 27 ppg last 2 years.

We made them look like stars out there with our "power" pro style blah blah 1970s offense. Even a mediocre b12 offense scored 3x more than we did vs VU. Hint hint

I totally agree on the 3-4 defense. You have to have outstanding dl and lb in my opinion to be successful in 3-4 defense, and we are far from outstanding.

Effort counts for alot, and we did not get a good one from our team against Vandy. Take Balboa here, the one time he wasn't into it in the ring that Clubber Lang dude d**n near killed him.

A real offensive coord could have taken our talent and beaten lots of team. Like I have said numerous times............Pruit tried to take spread talent and run a power offensive.............NO WAY !!!!!! I think he has discovered that but doubt he will ever admit it. Lets face it, Helton sucked as an offensive coord !!! Just strictly my opinion.

Because their line of scrimmage players on offense and defense were better than ours.

Your concerns will be compounded when Mizzou looks very pedestrian against another mid-level opponent in its bowl game. The coaches change at UT, but the inability to develop and motivate the players remains.

Vandy and Mizzou didn’t just beat us, they embarrassed us. And there is no way that Vandy, Mizzou or Baylor for that matter have better talent. If you aren’t concerned, you are delusional.

Because playing and beating the Vols is like winning the Super Bowl for Candy. Playing Baylor in a minor bowl doesn't get the same motivated play.
